Yum's logo might be too simple for a copyright / trademark (I haven't researched it in depth) but it's still a recognizable brand logo being misused.

Kinda funny, kinda really wrong.

Re: “The Worst Piece Of Social Media Advice I’ve Ever Heard…”

Pretty much my summary in that last sentence was that there's a middle ground.

If someone took the "only connect with people you know" too literally, they might go the other route and just connect with everyone. And there's a lot of junk requests out there too.

Re: “The Worst Piece Of Social Media Advice I’ve Ever Heard…”

I disagree about the LinkedIn advice ... mainly because I get a lot of spammy people from random countries sending me the auto-generated text about wanting to connect with profiles that are barely filled out. They really have no interest in connecting with me, they just want to appear to be a part of my network or want to be able to more easily spam me. This is like the desperate MLM reps hawking their wares at a networking event and who are only interested in their sales numbers, not you and even sometimes no interest in the product they are selling.

I'm not saying don't connect with anyone you don't know on LinkedIn but you shouldn't connect with EVERYONE you don't know there also.

Re: The Design Problems of Apple’s New iPhones and Watch

IF they make the apple watch waterproof I want it.

Replace the fitbit, an hrm, AND be able to ask siri to take a note for me when some epiphany occurs while I'm washing my hair - yes!

But I've jumped in too many pools or got in the shower with jewelry I forgot I had on and I don't want to destroy a $350 device with a similar mistake. Also - how about charging and sleep tracking? That's another question they need to answer (pillow clip would be my suggestion on that one.)

I see the watch as a likely quantified self / life hacker's ideal than the other target markets you mentioned. A lot of people are already wearing less than stylish fitness tracking devices and this would be a huge step up.

WATERPROOF THE APPLE WATCH PLEASE!!!!!!!!!

Re: Worth sharing: Mascara smackdown
What’s Non-Toxic, Cruelty-Free & Works?

Hadn't heard of them - looks good, I'll check them out! So I doubt my height would give you much more detail. I am around 5'7" though (it actually varies depending on how badly my back is out ... which sounds scary!) :)

Really what you want to do is check out the shaft measurement and measure from your arch to height that would be comfortable on your leg and see if that measurement looks right.

I have worn these for probably about 8 hours max fairly comfortably. My shoe preference is ballet flats and flat sandals though so you might want to take that into consideration if you're used to wearing shoes with major arch support.

These get warm so I would recommend a good thin wool knee high sock to help with the heat and moisture. And I have worn them to do a fair amount of walking as well as outdoor work (creek cleanups several times, I think maybe a 2 mile walk a few times as well.)

And I have tucked in skinny jeans as well as once with bootcut jeans folded but that's a really tight fit for me personally so I'm more likely to roll up jeans and leave them on the outside of the boot. It also took some time to get a boot cut to look right and I don't like spending time futzing when I'm getting dressed so another personal preference involved there. It's not impossible, just more comfortable not tucking in skinny jeans.

Re: Ipsy Glambag June 2014

Keep in mind that it's very hit and miss each month as both ipsy and birchbox are not focused on healthy products. Some months I get boxes that have healthy products I've never seen or heard of and it makes it worth it.

You may be interested in Goodebox though which is more focused on healthy products and has been a box I've been thinking about adding to my subscriptions.

I still PERSONALLY react to cones which are in a fair number of the healthy products which means that Goodebox would still be hit n miss for me and at $18/month instead of $10/box/month that ipsy and birchbox are. My odds are just better with ipsy and birchbox because of the cones issue that breaks out my skin.

Goodebox tells you what they like about a product but they don't seem to list out the ingredients so you are left trying to find ingredients on the product site and sometimes those just list KEY ingredients instead of a full list.

Ipsy lists out full ingredients for all products.

Birchbox lists out ingredients on most of the products they ship.

That makes it easier for me to run reports on both the Ipsy and Birchbox products I get as well.

Anyway - glad I could be of help!

Re: Ipsy Glambag June 2014

I really appreciate the feedback on this! And maybe I've been recently listening to some podcasts heavily focused on delegation when I wrote that. :)

You did say "FIRST digital hire" though so is there a chance that there simply still a technology related uncertainty/comfort factor here even with a larger company? Where they may see the value and understand the value of other senior level positions, is there a chance that when it comes to digital they don't fully see the benefits and value that that position would add? And maybe, if there is uncertainty, hiring a "junior" position instead of a "senior" position would be a less risk/expense?

In your article above, I see companies that are not fully sold on the value that someone in that position could bring to the table. "We don't have enough work for..." or "we can not afford..." indicate that they see the position more as an expense, not an investment.

I had someone the other day ask me what percent of gross they should spend on advertising. No strategy, no plan, not looking for a rule of thumb, just a flat percent that should be spent on advertising as if that was all they needed to know. An expense that they've been told will bring them results vs a tool that they need to learn at least a little bit about to get a return on their investment. It's like buying a hammer because you know you need a hammer but then proceed to use the handle to hit the nail. You MIGHT eventually get the nail into the wood or wall but if you learn to use the tool properly it would go better and faster. Right tool, improper use. I could probably hit the nail with a shoe and get about the same results as the hammer handle...

I think I'm close to mixing metaphors here and should probably stop... :)

Re: Why aren’t companies hiring dedicated, experienced digital staff?

"The question is – what is holding so many companies back from making that first digital hire and why when they do finally take somebody on, it tends to be a junior position who has no authority to improve digital adoption?"

I think some of this may have to do with how people manage their companies and their level of skill with delegation. It may depend on how much they want to trust someone (or allow themselves to trust someone) with something they know is important. If they hire for a junior position then they are clearly not going need to be trusted with as much responsibility as someone who is a senior level position. Particularly if the person or HR department doing the hiring doesn't have a thorough vetting process in place to determine the difference between someone capable of a junior vs senior level activities.

I could be wrong but that was the first thing that came to mind.

Do people ever hire a junior level position and then promote? Do people ever hire a junior level position and then go back once they are comfortable with that and hire someone for a senior level position? Is it ever a baby steps style process where it's easier to trust their decision making capabilities for a junior level position first?

Then there's the perception of anyone in technology just being code monkeys ... Do they understand that they have the option of hiring someone into a senior level position even?

Re: Procrastinate on Purpose with Rory Vaden [Podcast]

This is an incredibly powerful couple of podcasts. It looks like up to 22.5" width: http://authenticallyemmie.c...

Leather boots are also an option if you're having trouble finding rain boots specifically and still want something to keep your feet dry. Find a good pair and apply waterproofing to those.

When it comes to waterproofers, I've used Nikwax as well as several other brands of shoe waterproofers. Everything from spray to foam applicator types and I typically get them at the local sporting goods/outdoors stores. Read the information on the bottle if you are concerned about color changes. Waterproofing leather shoes seems to help them last longer as well but can make browns look a little darker.

Re: J.Law Gets the Photoshop Treatment

I'm fine with the idea of fixing a bit of stray hair that ruined a single shot or say removing strings that are holding something up in the background but she looked fine without the photoshopping. Even adjusting the shade of the blouse would be fine (since I know how much different lighting could do that anyway.) It's the degree that photoshopping is taken to that is typically taking it too far. At what point should it be considered a photorealistic drawing? This one is fairly tame by comparison to many others though (why exactly did they get rid of the muscle in her arms?)

I DO think more of these before and afters images should be promoted on the internet though so kids are at least aware of the kinds of changes being made to photos. It was short notice but there is a clinic on board development for Oct 22 that I think will be really helpful. I signed up for it even though it was the last day to register (just barely!) I had only recently become aware of that organization and need to review more of what they offer. One of our other board members was already going for another group so we will have at least two people at the board development clinic (which the event info said was more ideal than sending one person.) I do think there are other topics that I need to learn about but of the four clinics available on the 22nd it looked like the board development one might cover some things I needed to know at the moment.

CKAVA I hadn't heard of so I'll see what they have to offer as well.

Again, thank you! :)

Re: Growing a volunteer community organization

1) I agree with the "put the oxygen mask on yourself first" but I can't take a vacation until at least November. I have an annual project on the books that has to be done over this next month (for my business, not the community organization) for a variety of reasons it's not an option to go off until after it's completed and printers proofs are in hand. I knew the vacation recommendation was coming as soon as I said the B word. :)

2) again with the college volunteers - I think combining this with Steve's idea of giving more recognition and a way to use this on their resumes. More volunteers seems key.

3)
a) the concert series is actually one of the few things I don't have to check in on too often ... but I worry about succession planning on this event.
b) the bike lanes are with the city/state at the moment... it's more on autopilot than most projects . Another grant project is not (where I mentioned that I think I just realized one thing that was causing me some stress in my response to Steve.)

We HAVE partnered with some businesses on certain things though and they have dropped the ball as well when there weren't regular follow-ups.

Some of this may be going back to that growing pains issue where people (outside the board) may not have been told to check in with a specific board members. So maybe we need some guidelines for best management practices for committees and projects.

4) This is where my lack of experience with groups will show. I had never heard of the Hands on Network etc - these are exactly the kinds of resources I'm looking for! Should I mention now that this is the first and only community organization I've ever been a part of? And sometimes I wish I had been on the board of at least one larger organization before ending up as President with this one?

Firestarter sessions has been on my "to read" list for awhile (for my business, not the community org) but I haven't gotten to it yet. Maybe some of this is just simply the exhausting aspect of taking an organization and working it through some of the growing pains that come with going from a few people doing all of the work to lots of people accomplishing even more.

I do have some lists that run through as a "do this and then done" sort of state but I can't seem to apply that to everything.

I have a list of running projects that I have to keep checking in on which is part of the reason my checklist never seems done however.

When I stop checking in on them, they don't get taken care of (I really wish that weren't the case. I don't doubt anyone's capabilities - it's just simply that things keep being dropped by people unless I remind them regularly.) For example: The bylaws changes took a year and a half - I started off on the assumption that it would just get done if I sent an email with a general summary and checklist of changes that had been agreed upon during a board meeting and then left it to someone else to complete. A year later and it still wasn't done so I started following up monthly and THEN it was taken care of pretty quickly. That "I have a business to run too" problem I mentioned but I figured it was better to have a good practicing lawyer to do bylaws revisions instead of a college student.

I can't seem to get everyone on the same page with technology (no master tasklist that everyone can work from) because they all use different systems for their own work and don't want to add another. Some I wonder if they still do everything on paper alone sometimes.

There are a lot of delegation lists that require follow ups or reminders AND a lot of maintenance lists. Just creating a running document with certain items has helped keep up with some of it because I needed to keep it separate from my business tasks.

Mission statement was covered awhile back and a shorter tag line version of that was also created.

I have been slowly going through and meeting with each board member one on one and trying to figure out HOW they want to be involved which was something I don't think anyone ever discussed with them in the past. I think those that I've done this with have become a bit more involved.

However I have also had some people unable to confirm a quick coffee meeting to do that review with. And maybe for some of those people it's time to transition them off the board. Where do you draw the line though? Sometimes they have valuable feedback on projects during a board meeting but can't commit to anything beyond that.

As for the website - THAT is the EASY part for me!!! Web design, development and design for print is my primary business.

I've almost finished a major revision of the website that needs to go through board approval and taken live soon. Photos of board members included. Photos from events included. But recognition for people not on the board so that they can use that on their CV - hadn't thought of that!

I haven't included all of the information about the specific group (name etc) here because this was the first post I've done on the Entreleadership website and I wasn't sure if my name was going to show up ... and we outgrew the last website I built for the group so I'm a bit ashamed of the current site... I really need to make that a priority.

At the same time, I can't ignore grants and their timelines. In talking about it .... I think I need to push a certain responsibility for a particular project off to someone else... the person who I thought from the start was going to take that responsibility but hasn't. (I know I'm being vague ... it's just something that now occurred to me while writing this. Something that I don't think I realized was causing me some stress.)

Still looking for some books and some other resources I can maybe dig into! ;)

Re: St. Ives Hair Repair Intensive Conditioner

Nothing has been quite the same ... there are some excellent suggestions in the other comments however. None are an exact match in my opinion.
