Media is not and should not be nationalistic. If Tillerson insists on traveling abroad without a press corps, then it should be the role of foreign media and/or US media with foreign bureaus to work cooperatively to keep track of him and share information without being devoted to their own profits.

One of my favorite quotations is by John Steinbeck, which he pens in "Travels with Charley" the following passage:

"In Spanish there is a word for which I can’t find a counterword in English. It is the verb vacilar, present participle vacilando. It does not mean vacillating at all. If one is vacilando, he is going somewhere, but does not greatly care whether or not he gets there, although he has direction. Everything in the world must have a design or the human mind rejects it. But in addition, it must have purpose or the human conscience shies away from it."

A few years ago when everyone was writing books on social media this, social media that, I asked my blog readers why I should write a book. Their response was swift: because we'd want to read your voice.

I always keep that in mind when I question my value -- on anything. Regardless how many other voices exist on that thing, if mine is vacant then I should say something. And, I usually do.

After four years, can any of us watchers and doers claim that anything worthwhile has been achieved? A few best practices in the federal sector -- but I'm waiting for trickle down adoption into state and local. That's where the real change would take decades to occur.

Hi Siobhan, how do you respond to the critique of digital marketing degrees in that they teach trends but not sustainability? For instance, Facebook is constantly rewriting its algorithm and changing features. Do students learn specific tactics that might use a Facebook feature that disappears when they graduate; or do they learn big picture concepts that are not platform-specific?

That's a fascinating quote -- and a more fascinating Salon article. Erecting more signage in communities is not the answer, not because of cost but because of blight. There are enough signs alongside roads and another sign will blend in, not create focus. I don't know the solution other than what Rachel suggested to redefine why we have roads and to change them.

I know a lot of people prefer to subscribe to blogs by email notification; but I'm old school and prefer RSS. It's annoying when I have to click to the site to read the full post. Waitasec Scott. You don't do those tasks on non-snow days? I ensure my email inbox is empty by the time I go to sleep and I've been practicing this for two years. Either I reply to messages or archive them for short-term response or long-term storage. GMail helps with labels.

I agree with you to a point, Kevin. You assume said employer uses social media. But if the person doesn't have a Twitter account, how relevant is it that you are tweeting? In my case, I have a hard copy version of my resume; but I also have comparable content on my LinkedIn profile and at http://ariherzog.com which is what I suggest would-be employers visit.

See, people use social media differently. I use Twitter most of the time for casual chit-chat and an employer will only learn that I'm sociable. I don't allow search engines to index my Facebook profile (and the updates I specify for friends-only). What's left? Google+? What's that? But, like you, I also blog -- and, to me, that's the best way for someone to understand me. When job ads ask for writing samples, I point them to my blog and/or to specific posts that received a lot of social shares.

On the flip side you have someone like me who used to work 40+ hours a week until a layoff coincided with the recession, you created (or, I created) a business because nobody was hiring. I kept the business for five years and I'm now looking to return to the full-time workforce, to escape coworking and return to coworkers.

Networking sites are launched daily. I don't grasp the value of joining new ones. I'd rather create a SurveyMonkey poll, tweet etc a link to it, and the app will give me statistics on what percentage answered which.

You don't need to unfriend people to maintain balance; just add the noisemakers to a friend list of their own and this enables them to see your stuff but you won't see them unless you click into the list.

You missed another reason promoting electoral competitiveness: party designation. Across the state, 53% of registered voters are "unenrolled" aka independents. Blue we may be, but we are also open minded.
