In a world of seemingly limitless information and entertainment choices, Boxee's ability to narrow the field using trusted data from your personal networks sounds intriguing.

Re: Privacy and the Treacherous Middle Ground

Fred,

It's interesting that you use Foursquare as an example here.

I use Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn as completely public channels. (I'm used to this, because I've been a public figure - a radio host - for most of my adult life.) Foursquare, on the other hand, is the one social network I've decided to sandbox as a place where I want to know everyone on my friends list.

That said, I agree completely with your assertion that "the middle ground" is treacherous. This makes me wonder, though - is this a problem that needs to be be addressed by Facebook... or its users?

Re: Email Bankruptcy

This looks like a job for... an assistant?

Re: Multi-Function Printer Follow-up

Looks like we've just witnessed a grand (and successful) experiment in "social shopping". I use LinkedIn and Twitter for business, Disqus for commenting (on only the best blogs!), and Foursquare for connecting with friends and business acquaintances in my physical communities.

Any one of these, taken separately, would provide only a snapshot of my graph. Aggregating the feeds makes sense as a business model (a la FriendFeed), but, as you have noted, one loses the ability to "sandbox" different relationships.

That said, I believe the "Like" button has the ability to become Facebook's killer app. Publishers are given an opportunity for content to spread virally on FB's vast network, and Facebook gains valuable insights into what that network considers important.

Re: Bit.ly Kicks Butt.ly

Thanks, Melody!

The "Share and Enjoy" feature is a WordPress plugin called "Sexy Bookmarks"...

B.

Re: CONFIRMED: New York Times to Start Charging for Website in 2011

I wonder if this has anything to do with the imminent release of the Apple tablet. My guess is that the tablet will make it easy to transport a current subscription to a digital format, or to purchase individual pieces of content they way be buy songs on iTunes.

The Times won't be able to charge for information that's available elsewhere - that's a given - but as publications look for a way to finance investigative work that's expensive to produce, this might be just the ticket. The story goes from "They're charging me for something I can get for free" to "I'm happy to pay for this because I'm supporting journalism that isn't tied to advertising".

Re: Merry Christmas Everyone

Merry Christmas, Fred!

Re: Happy Holidays 2009- My Photo Project

Kids are what it's all about. That being said, I think you're right on the money with respect to the confusion associated with the service. This should serve as a reminder to those of us on "the front lines" - that when it comes to new tools, we need to pay close attention to how people use (and understand) them in the real world.
