Please do not carry on as if that's the case. I wrote an article concerning the state of fatshion blogging and my opinion on it, how I'm worried that the influence brands have on it are unhelpful at best and damaging at worst. I absolutely resent the way that brands give bloggers nothing but smoke up the arse and a few free things, and we are expected to give them all of our platform and our audience. I will not be ok with that anymore on my blog, and I want people to think about what's appropriate for them and how it checks in with their own politics.

I did not write this for fun and I do not have time for malice. I think it's cheating a lot of fat people out of justice to be happy for a couple of fat bloggers who get to turn up at fashion events, or the piddling amount of free swag or whatever else brands are trying to woo us with these days. Small wins are great but there is a world of shitty things happening and I feel rotten about settling for mainstream press coverage on lighthearted issues when we need to push for more.

I know where my politics are and I want us to think bigger.

Re: When Activism Gives Way to Advertising: How Fat Girl Blogging Ate Itself

Bloggers with more privilege on the many spectra I mention are prolific, it's not that they have nothing worthwhile to contribute - that's absolutely false! I feel that it's a huge injustice that bloggers with nil to little privilege are rarely highlighted. There are a couple of bloggers of colour who have had mainstream press, this much is true, but by and large it's a game where brands favour whiteness, youth, able bodies and very old fashioned ideas about gender.

I absolutely reject that fat shaming has nothing to do with capitalism. Absolutely! The diet and pharmaceutical industries ride on the backs of fat people, taking their money and blaming them when their crappy products don't work! (Or worse, kill them.)

Re: When Activism Gives Way to Advertising: How Fat Girl Blogging Ate Itself

I don't believe making clothes plus size costs much more. Making clothes ethically costs a lot more, and that sucks because I'm fat and I'd like to shop ethically but I don't have much money for clothes. That's a whole other issue though!

I can't shop vintage because I'm too fat. I can make my own clothes, and I do when I can, but it ends up costing way more because I don't have wholesale fabric buying capability, it takes me a LONG time to sew a garment, and my skills are frankly not excellent.

The politics of clothes for fat people are so deep.

Re: When Activism Gives Way to Advertising: How Fat Girl Blogging Ate Itself

I object to the term "ghetto" being applied to blogging considering it has deep roots in racism, but I do feel that bloggers are not compensated adequately for the PR services they provide.

Re: When Activism Gives Way to Advertising: How Fat Girl Blogging Ate Itself

My issue is that mainstream media doesn't want the full meaty truth about fat embodiment. It makes too much money from anti-fat industries! In Australia, I can't count how many media requests I get are about clothes and I turn them down because I'm not interested in talking about just clothes. I want to talk about health and bullying and access to food and SO many other things!

Re: When Activism Gives Way to Advertising: How Fat Girl Blogging Ate Itself

I think that people feel protective of what little access we do have to the limited number of plus size brands, but at the same time I'm frustrated and want those labels to do MORE!

Re: When Activism Gives Way to Advertising: How Fat Girl Blogging Ate Itself

That's a huge compliment, considering I resist being called a writer (ha, insecurity!)
