On later reflection, I have to agree with you. The greens have done a lot for this issue. I tarred them with the same brush as the other groups who tagged along yesterday, which I shouldn't have done so quickly.

I think if we go too far towards one side's wants, the other will resent the outcomes. It will be a fine line but you are right when you say we need to confront the issues head on.

Spot on. Yesterday to me is about celbrating what I feel is the greatest country on earth. We have our share of issues that we need to overcome, and we can't change the past.

We can change the future, but changing the date of Australia Day just pushes the issue to one side.

From the information in the article it doesn't sound like he indiscriminately took to the girl with a belt and smacked her around a bit. But we'll never know thanks the the media deciding to focus on the sensationalist issues of the case.

There is a difference between child abuse and discipline. I've had a wooden spoon across my legs/backside a few times and I wouldn't call that abuse. I think it comes down to the mindset behind the action. If the father was constantly and regularly hitting the child with implements, then lock him away. This sounds like a one off incident where some tough love was required.

But I don't think leaving her in foster care is going to help one bit. I can only presume that her mother isn't on the scene or is unfit or is just unable to look after her daughter. Perhaps that says something, but I don't know. If the mother can't take her, why not put her back with her dad?

If the courts are so concerned with her welfare, have court appointed officers to check in regularly to make sure everything is ok. If this is a one off and if it wasn't a violent rampage against his daughter, then why is she being thrown into a system that just doesn't seem to work for most kids?

I'm all for positive parenting to a point. There will be kids who respond better to that sort of thing than others. But there are some kids who will not listen to reason or positive parenting. Do we let them run free?

Parents should explore all options for helping their child to grow up, including positive parenting. I draw the line at suggesting that there should be no physical discipline of children at all. It should be a reasonable force (a firm hand without much force seemed to be enough for me) though.

What if we said that no implements were to be used except a hand (with reasonable force) across the backside. I certainly have no problem with that at all. Perhaps the use of a belt or other item brings in those grey areas where the line between loving discipline and abuse is blurred.

I agree that a positive parenting course would have been a better outcome assuming there is nothing more sinister happening. Perhaps some monitoring by child protection workers. Sending her inter-state doesn't seem in the best interests of the child in this case.

This is a major frustration that I have. Natalie has so little to choose from, but then I have even LESS to choose from. At least if I go to one of the 'Big Man' stores I can get working clothes, but I want to be stylish 24/7, not 9 - 5.

I'm going to have to start looking on the internet for some decent styling clothes to purchase and see what I can do about it. It's either that, or mope and not do anything.

Yup, I totally agree. It is a shame that people are told "You feel bad, AND YOU SHOULD!" rather than being supported.

I think kids should be supported in finding things that they enjoy doing, like going running, playing sport and just generally being kids. Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig is not generally being a kid. If an active child is fat but happy and healthy, leave them be.

Yeah I totally agree with Kath here. Sell the dress and buy a new one that fits, or something else that suits your body type.

Love yourself for who you are now, not who you (or friends, or society) think you should be. The number of days we have to enjoy this are too short to miss out on just a few by thinking we aren't worth it.
