The F2 prime lenses don’t fully resolve the 40mp sensor, and I imagine that the 23mmf2 fixed lens on the X100 won’t resolve it either.

It will make sense to release the next X100 with the 40mp sensor, but wouldn’t that also make it necessary to release a new lens? Unless I am missing something here.

No weather resistance, no click-y aperture, same optics as Viltrox, but at a significant markup. Plus, no confirmation on whether in-camera lens correction is enabled. I was really looking forward to the Tokina lenses, but I am quite underwhelmed.

Yes, I do hope the Sigma F 1.4 lenses are coming soon. I’m quite happy with my Fuji 16mm F1.4, but I would love to have weather resistance 23/ 33/ 56 mm F1.4 lenses on the Fuji X system ASAP.

I have been looking forward to these Tokina F 1.4 lenses.

Do we know if these Tokina lenses have in-camera corrections, weather resistance and click-y aperture rings?

I have been holding off on the Viltrox lenses because of these three missing features, even though the reviews have been excellent.

I completely agree, which is why I haven’t bought any of Fuji’s telephoto zooms or outdated fast primes.

I’m waiting for the Sony A7IV so that I can finally use the Sigma and Tamron E mount lenses. Maybe, I’ll be happiest with a two-system kit, with the F2/2.8 primes on Fuji, and the F1.4 primes and F2.8 zooms on Sony.

Again, I’m excited about the 70-300mm lens and it looks like it might be the Fuji zoom I come to love.

Not that my Fuji lenses seem to have held their value either, at least in my country. I have tried to sell my 3-month old 10-24mm F4 and 16-80mm F4 zooms, and would have needed to take a 40-50% loss.

Yes, the 16-80mm F4 lens is indeed soft at 80mm. I do hope the 70-300 performs strongly across the focal range.

The Tamron (and Sigma) lenses for Sony exist and provide such excellent value that many, including me, consider their existence the primary reason to get into the Sony E system. In fact, many Sony users over at Sony Rumors do believe that it doesn’t make sense anymore to buy the Sony 70-200mm F2.8 GM lens over the Tamron 70-180mm F2.8. The popularity of the Tamron and Sigma lenses on Sony E shows that the Fuji X system would provide much stronger value, and attract/ retain more happy users, only if Fuji would stop being short-sighted and open up their lens ecosystem to third party lens manufacturers.

I support Fuji by buying the Fuji lenses that provide the right price-performance value (mostly the Fujicron primes) and criticize Fuji in the areas that they lag behind (zooms, fast primes) so that they can fix them. I can’t imagine why anyone who wants the system to grow stronger wouldn’t do that.

Not that Fuji is the only one being short-sighted. A big disadvantage for the Nikon Z and Canon EOS R systems against Sony E (especially for new users) is the lack of cost-effective third-party lenses. I was eyeing the Nikon ZII, but I’m definitely not going to pay $2000 each for a trio of F2.8 zoom when Tamron and Sigma options on Sony E cost half that much.

Again, I’m excited about the 70-300mm lens and it looks like it might be the Fuji zoom I come to love.

I would imagine that Fuji’s APSC advantage would be most visible in its telephoto lens offering, but I haven’t seen any evidence of that so far.

The XF 50-140mm F2.8 compares unfavorably to Tamron’s 70-180mm F2.8 full frame lens in terms of price, size and optical quality. The 100-400mm is far too big, and neither that lens, nor the other telephoto options 18-135mm or 55-200mm are really benchmarks in terms of optical quality. Some even lack key features like weather resistance, optical stabilization, fast silent autofocus, and teleconverter compatibility. Speaking for myself, I have had zero desire to buy any of these lenses even though I have nine Fuji lenses (mostly the Fujicron primes).

I was hoping that Fuji would make a lens that compares favorably with Sigma‘s sub-$1000 100-400mm lens, and it seems like Fuji just might do that with the 70-300.

Fuji has so far hit all the right notes — small size and weight, weather resistance, optical stabilization, teleconverter compatibility. If the optical and autofocus performance is at least as good as the 16-80mm lens (minus the softening at 80mm), the 70-300mm might prove to be Fuji’s best telephoto lens so far. Finally, it seems that Fuji might have a lens that fully realizes the possibility of APSC’s advantage in telephoto lens design.

Yes, I have heard good things about the Sony 35mm F1.8 (and also the 85mm F1.8). And, I’m looking forward to the Sony 16mm F1.8. With Sigma and Tamron during on all cylinders and Sony upping their lens game, the Sony E mount does look very attractive.

I just hope Sony really provides as much value with the A7IV, as they did with the A7III. With the new menus, the latest autofocus, better build quality, and improved ergonomics, at a $2000 price, the A7IV will be difficult to beat.

I’m also impressed at how well the A7III has held its price for three years. I love the Fuji X-T4, but in India, it’s already selling at the same price as the deeply discounted X-T3 as part of the year-end festive offer (prompting me to buy a second body).

Overall, it’s good to see that all four camera manufacturers (Canon, Nikon, Sony and Fuji) and all four third party lens manufacturers (Sigma, Tamron, Samsung, Viktrox) really got their mirrorless game together in 2020, in spite of a difficult year. I might like, and be invested in, one brand more than the others, but I want all of them to continue to do well, so that all of them are forced to innovate and provide value.

I am deep into the Fujifilm X system with two X-T4s and nine lenses.

However, I have been compulsively following the Sony A7IV rumors because of two reasons — the autofocus advantage that Sony has and the excellent lenses that Sigma is making for the Sony E mount.

I intend to continue to use my X-T4s for street, travel and documentary photography, but bring out the Sony/ Sigma combination for specific occasions like portrait and event shoots.

The E-mount lenses I am looking forward to buy all have the Fuji aesthetics, with beautiful mostly metallic construction and clicked aperture rings. From Sigma, the 85mm F1.4 DG DN Art tops the list, and I hope that this is the first of many F1.4 DG DN Art lenses from Sigma. The Sigma 14-24 F2.8 and 24-70 F2.8 DG DN Art zooms are also tempting, even though I’m more of a prime user. From Sony, the only lens I’m really interested in — given the price/ performance/ design combination — is the 20mm F1.8 G and I hope that Sony will also launch more such lenses soon.

Someone said that the real reason to join the Sony E mount is the Sigma and the Tamron lenses, and I fully agree. I wish other camera brands (Canon, Nikon, Fuji) will see that Sony has built an insurmountable advantage due to its open lens ecosystem, and open up their own systems, instead of trying to optimize for short-term lens revenue.

This is the second best news that has come in 2020, and both on the same day!

I have been saying that the most important decision Fujifilm can make to attract and retain users into the Fuji X system is to open up the X mount to third party lens manufacturers like Sigma and Tamron.

I imagine that Sigma will first test the waters with the DC DN lenses it has already launched for Sony E mount: the excellent, weather-resistance, fast-autofocus 16mm/ 30mm/ 56mm F1.4. It will be amazing if Sigma adds an aperture ring to the Fuji versions, similar to the one on its new DG DN lenses with the click on/ off button, but just the current versions will be a big step forward for Fuji. The Viltrox 23mm/ 33mm/ 56mm f1.4 lenses are not weather resistant, and there’s no confirmation yet that the upcoming Tokina 23mm/ 33mm /56mm f1.4 lenses will be weather resistant, so these will be the first.

And, if these lenses are successful, we can hope for more developed-for-Fuji DC DN lenses, opening up a new world of exciting possibilities. Maybe, I should stop obsessively following the rumors for the Sony A7IV. :)

It’s not that people want to own three Fuji 23mm lenses at f1.2/ f1.4/ f2. Some people like me just won’t buy the old f1.4 because of lack of weather resistance and modern autofocus. Others just won’t buy the new Fujicron f2 because of lower aperture. So, even though Fuji has two 23mm lenses, both of them ae compromises, and neither of them serve the need that a modern autofocus, weather resistance 23mm f1.2 lens will serve.

Here are the two most important comments for me in the interview:

1. Fujifilm has understood that consumers demand more lens choice by opening up the lens mount to third party lens manufacturers. The ‘official’ third-party Tokina 23/33/56mm f1.4 lenses should be out anytime now (any rumors, admin?), and I hope that Fuji opens up the X lens mount for Sigma and Tamron soon. This is the most important step Fujifilm can take to attract and retain more users into the X mount, even if it puts Fuji’s own, often aging and overpriced, lenses under pressure in the short term. This will fill the key gaps in the Fuji X lens ecosystem, including: modern weather-resistant, fast-autofocus, fast-aperture primes; cheap entry-level primes like the XC 35mm f2; and telephoto zooms. This will also lower the total cost of ownership of the Fuji X system and dramatically improve the Fuji X users’ satisfaction with the system.

2. Fujifilm does not plan to upgrade many of its old lenses and add weather resistance and faster autofocus. The upgrades to the 10-24 F4 and the 27mm F2.8 are welcome, but so is the introduction of the presumably fast-autofocus and weather-resistance 18mm F1.4. I think we are unlikely to see upgrades to the 23mm F1.4, 33mm F1.4 and 56mm F1.2 lenses. Instead we are likely to get 23mm F1.2 and 33mm F1.2 to add to the 50mm F1.0 lens, and I think that will be amazing, as long as Fuji can control the size and weight (unlike the 50mm F1.0). I won’t be surprised if Fuji also launches a few more F2/ F2.8 primes: maybe 12mm F2, 70mm F2, and 135mm F2.8 OIS. I don’t know if there’s space anymore to launch a F1.4 prime after the 18mm F1.4.

I imagine the RX1r II was quite a niche product at $3300, just like the Leica Q2 serves a small niche at $5000.

I’m hoping the Zeiss ZX1 builds a similar niche following so that we can have iterations with wider appeal in the future.

I hope that in a year or two, Zeiss or someone else launches a 30MP interchangeable lens version at $2000-2500.

What would be a good price, assuming that the sensor, the firmware and the user experience are good?

I was starting with the $1300 Fujifilm X100V and asking myself how much of a premium I would be happy to pay.
