Good write up Nate, I totally agree with you that most of schema.org related plugins aren't super helpful, I've been developing similar plugins (mainly for reviews) and ended up with 4 different products in 5 years, all of them doing almost the same thing but in a different way. None of them can be called complete or anything from that!

I think the reason why most of schema.org plugins can't serve professionals could be for one or more of the following:

- The Schema thing is actually a big thing, none of the available plugins can cover it all simple because developers need to work a lot more.

- Even though, Google supports only a few types of the available schema.org markup (not all of them has rich snippets too), still there is a lot of hassle trying to follow up with Google changes and updates, this never ends!

- Most of us (developers) do not have a punch of different real example sites to test out things. The development process involves a lot of testing, and it takes time to test real results, I personally have put together code and never being able to test it out.

- Theme developers missed the Schema world! They should stop doing it! They should let this job for plugins, or at least provide a way to disable it without having to modify the Theme core code. (this explains several markup errors that can't be fixed without hacking the core theme code), which is painful for some.

- No enough articles about schema, most of articles are basic (and missed up in a way of another), we probably need to educate customers more. I keep trying to convince them that my plugins doesn't fix errors caused by Themes or other plugins, I keep saying that plugins can not fix other plugin's mistakes. They insist that it should fix it :)

- The list go on... I can talk about this the whole day, but I am going to stop now!

Developing a plugin in this area isn't an easy job, there is a lot of challenges and blockers.

In the last 2 years, I've been experimenting with the Schema plugin (I am the dev of that plugin), I built it in a totally different way with future in mind, hopefully it will get enough attention from other developers who are welling to contribute.

Google Authorship images are gone since more than a year or so, which makes me think this study is old! A good study should have a published date, I guess!

Thanks for the post.

In my project, I created a free plugin, then I kept getting feature requests, I took notes and started to develop these features in a form of a Pro paid plugin. Since then, I developed on top of that another two pro plugins and some add-ons (around 10 add-ons), which does different tasks.

Things got too complicated in almost no time! I was selling all three pro plugins in one package. The whole deal was confusing to many potential customers, they couldn't decide which plugin to use.

I end up separating the most advanced plugin and its add-ons, I moved them to their own new website and domain name, so I toke them off the package and got a new home for it.

Even though, I was publishing several blog posts, sending out emails to all members....etc, it didn't seem to inform everyone! I am still in the middle of the road though, it's like solving a puzzle lol, but the good thing is I already know it's not that easy to make such move!

I am not sure which model works best, it depends on several metrics, however I am more into the free+premium and add-ons model, not forgetting that pricing and licensing may need some tweaking in the road.

Sometimes it's hard to explain to people what I really do for living! So, I go by "I am a website guy" or "I am a programmer" just to make things easy for them to understand and pass to another topic!

More strangely, I was surprised when a couple of my Family members reveal their thoughts, they see me on my computer or iPad for several hours, their wild guess was that I am addicted to Facebook lol!

Bottom line: no one really get it!

The only thing I see missing in the Digg Digg 's buffer button on your blog is your Twitter ID or via @socialmouths
You see.. I love to use the buffer button, I love to read your blog and share your stuff, but you always cost me an extra step to get the Twitter ID into it when I tweet a post (just like what I did now when I tweeted your awesome post :)Probably you have a reason not to set that!I am looking to use the plugin on the new design I am working on, it's going to be nice addition this time as I don't really want to insert more codes into my theme!
