Words matter. Forty years later it's now officially called the Falklands War. Same with your flu: 0.01% fatality rate vs. 1-4% for the virus. This isn't flu, JLM.

Re: Voices From The Real World I

What do I think? I think that a respitory disease that puts 10% of those infected into intensive care, of whom at least a tenth go on to die should not be described as flu.

Re: COVID19 What’s Next? South Korea's success in containment has largely been attributed to their ability to work backwards and test those who have come into contact with infected people. I am imagining not so much a Coronavirus app, but some sort of requirement for common apps (or even better mobile operating systems) to be legally obliged to incorporate backtracking functionality. This would probably raise some privacy issues but I believe the greater good argument must surely prevail here.

Re: Thanksgiving and my Mom’s raw cranberry mix

Thanks, you too.

Re: Thanksgiving and my Mom’s raw cranberry mix

There's a lot of truth in what you have written there Arnold.

Re: Bad Takes on Taxing Wealth (Especially Billionaires)

I'm a strong believer in markets but I don't think the central issue is whether billionaires actually deserve their wealth. Even if every penny is earned fair and square, I still believe there should be a cap on how much a single person can own, with the excess funds being put back to work in society. Whether this is through the government or other types of organization is, I believe, a detail (so in this scheme Bill would not have to dismantle his foundation).

Re: What Is Going To Happen In 2019

Excellent list Fred. I would only add that we haven't heard the last of the FB / opinion manipulation story. I expect laws to be enacted in both Europe and the States to limit social media's ability to claim editorial immunity.

I suspect the blockchain could play a role in some sort of more democratically robust editorial process (public audit trail) which could set the trend in other public facing and politically sensitive digital areas.

Re: Homage to my grandfather

That's beautiful Anorld, very touching It also reminds me of the relationship I had with my Italian grandfather, which was strikingly similar.

Re: Pivot or Fail?

Not a minor point Simon, a major point. Over the years I've posted quite a few comments on your blog and you've posted quite a few answers. If I were to take my part of these conversations away then I suspect I would be destroying value for both of us: we would both end up with two separate halves, which in isolation are worth less than the whole ('gestalt' I believe is the German word for this).

I'm trying to think how API keys would get round this issue. Any ideas?

Re: Video Of The Week: Albert on Squawk Box

The chap with the tie was quite annoying. It defines the prize that is available to humanity if we don't collectively screw up the ongoing digital transformation of society.

As such, I would tighten it up and make it more inspiring: from Newton's equations, Shakespeare's words, Leonardo's brushwork -- all the way down to apple pie made with home grown produce.

We are what we create.
