bethenextstep- I hear the Tour is going to be niceee. I'm still with AT&T but also sorta with Verizon (don't ask), so when my contract with AT&T is up, I will def look into the Tour for Verizon Wireless.

Kim- Agreed! Did your Curve help you in school too? I'm thinking they should make it part of the required supplies LOL

Epi- I can't imagine life without it either! I don't, however, have BlackBerry Maps on my phone. Maybe it's a Verizon thing? I *love* Google Maps though.

That's true. Well, this guy was/is currently a long time smoker, so his CO2 was probably normally around 60, maybe even higher.

170? Wow! That's CRAZY. I didn't know it was possible to sustain life with a PaCO2 that high. Totally cool that he is at home on O2 now... that is exactly why I want to become a respiratory therapist.

I'm really not certain the outcome of this patient. Last thing I remember before I left that morning was he was refusing intubation until his son made the decision for him. I know he (obviously) went back on BiPAP while in the unit, but am unsure of what happened after that.

@annie I know what you mean. I ask A LOT (and believe me when I say a lot) of questions. The RTs may seem annoyed or like it bothers them but chances are that is just because they are busy at the time or they do not have the answer. I can't imagine anyone who is in respiratory therapy or nursing or what-have-you that wouldn't want to answer your questions if they knew the answer. If they don't know it or can't tell you, just go to someone else. :)

@marcus Check this link: http://web2.facs.org/atls/A... . That's a list of all the ATLS courses offeredvia search. I'd contact the American College of Surgeons on the same site or contact the facility you'd like to take the course at regarding who is eligible for the course/exam, etc. As far as I know (and someone please correct me on this if I'm wrong), ATLS is offered for doctors, advanced care providers (NPs, PAs), and critical care paramedics. You may be able to take it without being EMT-P, but I imagine it would be much more difficult that way.

@C Thanks for the comment. I took Pharm. last semester and I thought it would be a lot of boring memorization but I actually enjoyed it a lot. It's not so much memorizing drug names and dosages (though that is a big part of it!) as much it is learning about the mechanism of action (ie- How the drugs act on the body, how they are absorbed, etc.); There's actually a lot of A&P involved, especially when you start learning about bronchodilators. I'm not sure what to expect in my diseases class, but it looks pretty interesting from the syllabus. I think I take Procedures II this summer.

@anniec898 No problem. That is one of the reasons I decided to write this post. Out of all those books, the two I'd recommend for self-study are Egan's Fundamentals and the Clinical Practitioner's Pocket Guide to Respiratory Care. We were told on the first day that Egan's is our Bible for the next two years. Lol.

@kate Thanks for the info. I tried to register on the website a while back and I was having problems with it. No one else in my class could register either for some reason. I'll really have to try it again. Thanks for stopping by, and good luck with school!

@Farrah: Thanks for stopping by my blog! I'm sorry to hear about your brother but at the same time it is wonderful that you are devoting your life to a profession that helps people with the same disease(s). I would definitely enjoy going to that camp and I'll have to seek out some more information from the ALA! I just finished reading an article in ADVANCE for Respiratory Care Practitioners in which BREATHE EASY (the same organization that sponsored the asthma camp, I'm guessing) sent a group of RTs to indian reservations to help the Native Americans with asthma and COPD. I will definitely look into this.

Thanks so much for the kind words regarding my blog and the advice about RT school. Glad to have you stop by.

I had no idea that you were pre-med until I read the Top RT Blogs of 2008 on the Respiratory Therapy Cave. That's great! I want to wish you good luck with that. I, too, am most likely going to try for med school after I finish respiratory therapy and work in the field for a while. I used to be intimidated by med school to the point that I didn't even consider it as an option, but so far RT school has shown me that I can do anything I work hard for and set my mind to. I hope it all works out for you.

I appreciate the comments regarding my blog & the Doc Anonymous show. I was pretty nervous (as I'm sure you could tell) and now that I'm sitting here listening to it, I'm like, "Man, I wish I would have said this and that and this instead, but oh well. That's live radio for you, eh?
