Darn. I forgot that ping.fm doesn't support Japanese. The English words also got cut off. That sucks.

What I said was it was my first visit to B-kyu gurume* spot Gyoza no Osho. Nothing special

I had read your blog entry last year :-)

My Mac address book is my central hub. MobileMe allows me for a great sync between the iPhone for both the contacts and the calendar.

The Google sync with Address Book was sketchy at best. Maybe now that they've implemented some changes, it will be better (the suggested contacts were poisoning the sync, the mapping was not done correctly, since Google was not standard, etc.).

You see, going through my contacts in Address Book is still way faster than the Gmail contacts. And yes, I want/need my contacts on the desktop, if only for back-up (which I also do with Plaxo: the sync with Gmail was also sketchy there, btw).

Don't have that much time now, will certainly play with all these tools once more to see if I can master a good sync plan once and for all.

That's more of an iPhone restriction rather than a Google one, but I think it's fair. Sync'ing to two sources from any platform is just asking for trouble.

What's the main benefit of MobileMe? You want to keep your contacts on your Mac? I guess Google doesn't have a good solution for that yet, although if you Mac software has an Exchange sync client I don't see any reason why you couldn't sync to your Mac (unless Google restricts the Exchange sync to mobile devices only).

Well, I won't be using that. Erasing all my contacts/calendar? I'm using MobileMe as my central hub and just want to sync, not replace my hub :-)

Just set up the iPhone sync (as described here http://www.google.com/mobile/apple/sync.html). It's part of the functionality of Exchange powered sync. The feature was mentioned in passing with the announcement but not really highlighted, surprisingly.

They will just be for ping.fm, but unfortunately they seem to up the count every time the page is refreshed so they don'r represent uniques. I probably count for at least 3 of those.

I heard from the locals you'll only get to see Fuji-san like this 1-4 times during the plum season. Supposedly very rare that it is cloudless until the early evening. Lucky day to visit.

Don't really care about SMS, this is so "passé" :-) Threading is a must, a groups (room), grouping (creating your own stream of people to follow, Twitterlator on the iPhone has implemented this, but it multiplies the API calls), there should be a third reply way: @ goes public, DM between people interconnected and another option, like PM (private message) between people not connected (maybe with day limit to avoid spam).
OAuth should be also implemented to avoid giving password to external twitter services.

Was great talking about this and other social media strategies with you two yesterday, Andrew and Lance.

Conversations are not threaded, there's no built in way to get @myname notifications, SMS doesn't work for Japan, there's no easy way to reply or direct message people from email.

I think we should each draw our micro-blog/status posting map somewhere and create some kind of a best practice. We're all doing that in a way, but have taken different routes.

Agree with the impact of Facebook and was thinking to add the same, at the same time I asked myself "which one can’t you do without?", by rephrasing the question as "which one would cause me the most hassle if it was suddenly not there" and got to ping.fm.

Having said that, I jointly run a couple of important sites (Tokyo 2.0 and Mobile in Japan) on Ning and would actually be much more in trouble if Ning disappeared, so maybe Ning should be at the top of the list.

Well that follow up sent me down a big black rabbit hole! :-)

There are some sites that ping.fm doesn't support, including Posterous, Vox, WIndows Live Spaces & Zooomr. And some of these are covered by www.utterz.com and www.shozu.com. A simple solution to get most of my posts (which go via email on iPhone) out to these services, would be to send to the individual address for these services. But 3 addresses instead of one adds a little complexity and room for error which is sure to lead to trouble at some point. I've been trying to find a simple solution either using Ping.fm's Custom URL feature or mail forwarding filters, but for some reason Shozu isn't accepting posts this way.

Anyway - was good to see you highlight some of the more powerful features of Posterous. Ping.fm also does that nicely, but can only do one photo per email I think.

As an aside, Ping.fm also posts to Utterli, which in turn connects to some services Ping.fm doesn't itself support: http://www.utterli.com/u/connections

Yep, you're right about the survey missing an "other". Oops. Yeah, those two options sound good. The trouble with constructing these polls is anticipating all the possible factors contributing to user behavior. I guess the best approach if you want to do it like a pro would be to do a test survey and see what comments come back and then do an official run.
