Facing an everyday digital dilemma

You know what sucks though? Forgetting your digital capture device of choice, going to one of your child's special events and taking it in without the device, and the sudden realization that comes over you that you'd been ejoying all his previous special moments by watching them "through" the display of a smartphone or camera, and how much worse it is than sitting there and actually watching him.

The brain is funny. Since then I noticed when I am holding up a device to record, I am watching him through it, but what is on my mind is if the video or image is in focus, if someone is getting in my way of shooting, how is the lighting in here...so I am more concerned with the memory than something like "Oh, he looks nervous, but he is doing a great job!" or "Look how cute they all look" or something like that. You really are more "in it" when you aren't looking through a lens or viewfinder.

I never heard about the 3 picture rule, but I like it. I also have since pared down the amount I try to capture. Before I felt like I had to capture EVERYTHING OR ELSE!!! 20 years ago, people didn't have these devices. They took a few pictures (likely until the roll of film ran out) and had their memories, and also enjoyed being in the moment. :)

Re: The phone call in the coffee shop: How NOT to point out bad tech etiquette

You've gotta be prepared. Putting earbuds in is not giving in, it is taking are of yourself to maintain your comfort. Giving in it not addressing it with the person. For me, I don't care what others do in a public place (when it comes to annoyance level I mean, and as long as it's not illegal/harmful) - if I don't like it, I need to do something about it. In this situation, it's moving to a different table (if the place is big enough,) putting my headphones on, or talking to them about it :)

Speaking of etiquette, though, what's up with the rude commenters?

Re: How to Schedule Retweets to Share at the Perfect Time, Without Ever Flooding Your Followers

This is cool and all - but scheduling retweets is added before the many, many time requested ability to simply schedule tweets for specific times? For example, we have one of the few shows that are available on TiVo. In order to get it to play on TiVo devices, we've had to upload two files to Blip over the past few years - one that you guys converted to everything else (our master file) and one that we specifically transcoded to support TiVo since none of the conversions that Blip did worked.

Do you know if this has changed, and if your HD conversion now supports TiVo devices? Admittedly, it's been probably 2 years since we last checked.

Re: Seattle Mind Camp 7- August 20th at thinkspace

Hi Iris,

Andru Edwards here - I run Mind Camp :)

In a nutshell, the short answer is that Mind Camp is for everyone. It isn't a tech camp, or social media camp, or anything else that pigeonholes the event. It is literally, whatever is on your mind.

We typically have about 6 things going on in a different room each hour. In one room you might have a talk about iPhone development, and in another you have Knitting 101, and in yet another you have someone brainstorming the creation of a new board game. After an hour, those sessions end and 6 news ones begin. As the event goes on, you are meeting people and learning about their passions, teaching and learning, etc.

Everyone can propose a session at Mind Camp. You will get a session form when you arrive. On it, you fill out what you want to talk about. It can be *ANYTHING*. As technical as space flight and exploration to as simple as coming up with a new strategy for Tic Tac Toe - and anything in between.

Hope that helps! If not - ask away.

Re: Apple releases iOS 5 beta 2 [updated]

Anyone know if you can actually update from beta 1 to beta 2, or if you have to restore?

Re: The Daily Weekly - Zibby Wilder - Meet Your Seattle Web Awards "Readers' Choice" Finalists!

Are you going to make the number of votes each of the five readers choice nominees received public?

Re: The Daily Weekly - Zibby Wilder - And the 2011 Seattle Web Awards Winners Are...

Are the readers choice nominees automatically getting invited to the party? :P

Re: Let’s Discuss Disqus | Blog & News | EllisLab.com

Wait, what?!? Not without some third-party add-on. What if you decide Disqus isn't for you, and you want to switch to the EE module? Your Disqus comments aren't synced into your EE database, and you lose them (as far as I understand.)

Re: http://www.gregaker.net/2010/nov/16/think_before_you_turn_it_on/

Nice.
