Good addition to the English language. Maybe the next Oprahfied application is a development from Harpo Studios, catering directly to the newly socialized Oprah demographic.

With the "sickeningly mainstream" status of Twitter - where are you turning for the semi-private conversation, sharing, and consumption provided during the Golden days of Twitter?

Andy

Re: Google...Tell me what I am looking for!

A possible answer is to attach a brand to existing themes in pop culture and hope viewers will subconsciously remember the product or brand placement at the POP. However, a more logical solution exists in examining why celebrity media attracts a disproportionate amount of attention.

My usual answer is "America Hates Intellectuals" but celebrity news and sports provide communal talking points for large portions of the American public. So how can your band become a cultural talking point or an icebreaker? Despite my distaste for the company, Apple has successfully placed their products at the center of cultural media such as music, video and news.

Andy

Re: Disclosure is not enough

Dear Zocalo Blog -

This is Great! I have worked with WOM for some time now. WOM comments also work in IE and Firefox. Would be awesome if WOM spread to Nokia, Sprint, and Verizon as well.

AangeloS :)

Re: Disclosure is not enough

Great post, Ryan. Wish there was a commenting screen requiring readers to spend time examining more than one post prior to commenting. This prevents professional commentors like MGOODE from leaving responses devoid of relevance. A good lesson for life in general not always followed in social media circles - listen before you speak.

Also - could you provide further explanation of "visible authenticity"? I have my own conception of the phrase but would enjoy your definition of this broad term.

Andy

Re: Now, That's Fast Motrin Relief

Paul -

If the tactics of Motrin become standard we are witnessing an interesting transition in the world of marketing. Advertisements are no longer a stagnant decision, companies must live with but a continuous experiment in consumer response.

The question remains how forgiving customers will be toward indecisive companies. Coca-cola decided to persevere through the FriendFeed fiasco - demonstrating that the company is dedicated to social media regardless of initial success.

Personally, I think Motrin would have benefited more organizing an ad hoc town hall meeting with supporters and dissenting moms to discuss the issue. Letting customers know you are listening is completely different from allowing them to control your brand.

Andy

Re: Don't Tase Me Bro! - Junk Fewd

Lesson Learned...I need to further research memes before attempting to replicate the success of Ryan's O Hai. The graph is from Compete.com and probably not entirely accurate, but provides a reference point for the typically low traffic of corporate blogs.

Also, the difference between Coca Cola and Deloitte would be reflected in their respective audiences. The author or community manager would reach out to individuals based on the obvious difference in interests. There is no pre-packaged solution for building a corporate blogging community.

Feel free to send links to any relevant European Blogs to add to our fodder. I am not sure if the bulk of American culture is ready for the openness promoted by Me.dium without a radical idealogical shift.

Hopefully, users slowly adopt services like Me.dium in small doses and eventually are prepared for complete immersion. In the mean time, I think the serendipity event provided facebook and myspace chat are more accessible to a larger population.

I will check out the search function and send over any opinions.

Andy

Re: Defining Sustainable Word of Mouth

Interesting...So you can function "externally" while still working within a corporation. The potential roadblock is in companies not willing to change based on input from external sources. Seems ridiculous when reading, but some companies would rather use observatory knowledge to inform decisions instead of input from those actually involved with their product.

Re: A New Conception of "Direct" Marketing

After writing - I contrived a nice buzzword summarizing the post. Constant iterations are crucial to the development of a concept. One question however:

Why is "liaison" included in the sustainable WOM relationship? Evangelists are more susceptible to distractions than actual employees who can represent a brand more authentically. I wonder if the true "sustainable WOM" experience removes influencers, evangelists, fanboys, etc and is replaced by direct communication between company and customer. Think of giant corporations as nothing more than a local mom & pop operating on a global scale through the web.

Adding multiple layers of communication might be proliferating the current disconnect. Thoughts?

Thanks again for the post -

Andy

Re: Up Close and Personal With Michael Phelps

Christy -

I will remind the staff to provide an RSS.
