Was just talking to someone this morning about the issues that seem to be universal with building the instrument control and data reduction software for large user facilities like mine. Do you let the instrument scientists, who are usually competent coders, but not software engineers, just get on and do it (the traditional approach) or bring in software people are are a) much more expensive and b) don't know the user experience but may be equipped to build something that is more easily extendable (and might be documented)

Re: Will we ever see a biosciences startup school?

I believe that's true. They do have a better understanding. You will see more and more pre-competitive information being shared, especially as a new generation of CIOs/CTOs come on board

Re: Will we ever see a biosciences startup school?

And due to the entrenched network effect commercial science is actually probably moving more rapidly than academia. They have the imperative and they have a better understanding of their IP position and how to protect that position while releasing information.

Re: Ologeez. Is this the paper discussion site we were looking for?

Hi Jason, it would be great to get some access to play around, then I can probably make some more useful suggestions. Will try to email you later from a .ac.uk domain if that is ok. Committment to Bibtex and XML is great, and I do appreciate that you're doing this amongst other more 'serious' things. Just to emphasise I think the future will be in people pulling things in from multiple places so good interaction with feeds and tools like Exhibit from the simile group is crucial to getting traction. What would be great would be if you could seamlessly pull all of my papers from citeulike/connotea into ologeez to provide all the functionality for all things.

Don't be discouraged by our criticisms either, we're a fussy lot. The only way things will get better is by people like you building stuff.

Re: Web as platform: Bret Taylor on Open Data

Pretty much!!! Sad part is that so many people just don't get it

Re: Web as platform: Bret Taylor on Open Data

It does seem to me that he's got it absolutely right, except as you say the implementation. But in one sense, isn't this what we've been saying all along, just about more interesting data sets than the phone book?
