Firstly, I disagree that mention of one's political views necessarily antagonises people with a different take - I like hearing the other side's POV if it's intelligently presented - be secondly, why the assumption that it's a bad thing if half of Twitter doesn't want to follow you? Surely the whole point is to find people with whom you have a shared interest, not to tweet so generically that no one could possibly be offended. I don't necessarily want all of Twitter to follow me - I want people who are interested in what I have to say to follow me.

If politics ain't you're thing... it's all good.

Re: 2009/01/06/twitter-follow-fail/

So, by "spewing" do you mean "any mention whatsoever of a possibly controversial viewpoint"?

Re: Twitter A Hotbed Of Frangers

It's a genuine relationship -- continuous and potentially strong. There are places for deep, engaged friendships, and important places and roles for light ones as well. It would be tragic, for example, if cross-guard Tommy were to be a casualty of one of the speeding cars in the intersection in which he safely stewards students and commuters.

Re: Twitter A Hotbed Of Frangers

franger - interesting term ... continuous / partial / fleeting friendship?

Re: WSJ: The Economics of Giving it Away

yep, I agree, Matt -- determining *how much* of a pain point a customer has is important... to try to ascertain what they will actually be willing to pay for

that's why customer research is so important -- nothing beats getting out there and talking to customers... but the beautiful thing about the Internet is that it offers many ways to do that even when you can't get face-to-face with enough of them to do adequate research

sorry I missed you today at our Social Media Breakfast! so much going on, and so many people that want to talk! let me know if you're up for coffee sometime soon... Vimeo differentiates on quality (among other soft benefits), and they give the user a taste of that HD experience once per month, or unlimited to the paid account. I know a handful of people that have opted to pay Vimeo, even with YouTube high quality now available, simply because they were able to try the service, see the superiority, and bring cash out of their pocket. Is that long term? Not likely.

I do disagree about pain points being over simplified. It sounds simple, and I use it interchangeably with "what problem are you trying to solve," but if you're not addressing that, you're creating novelty, not a sustainable business.

If the customer isn't willing to part with money for the pain remedy solution, maybe it's not a) enough of a pain or b) good enough a solution.

Re: WSJ: The Economics of Giving it Away

Chris Anderson has a charming way of stating the most excruciatingly obvious stuff, doesn't he? Remember, this is him writing here -- not the Wall Street Journal. He is simply a guest author.

His point, as I see it, is that the focus now has to be on the business model. (Agree: big huge duh.) Too bad he doesn't cite some examples of newer Internet business models that are, in fact, working (rare as they may be). But is "freemium" all there is?

It seems Anderson is putting out a call that more creativity is needed here. It's amazing how many 'Net entrepreneurs don't focus more on the hard question of "what will people pay for." Identifying customer pain points is great, but I think overly simplified.

The next question has to be: Will doing away with such pain mean said customer will unload some cash?

cheers,
Graeme

Re: 2009/01/06/twitter-follow-fail/

Got another one: I will not follow you if you are spewing your politics.
If you are, you're an idiot, because you're regularly pissing off half
of Twitter.

Zap - gone!

Re: Farting Our Way Through the Recession?

totally agree, Zoli... Yes, it is a good slide show isn't it, thanked my colleague just the same. User experience seems to be the competency the most overlooked in all of the latest evolutions of the web. At the same, UX could have had one of the greatest impacts.

Thanks on the congrats. I am very excited about joining the SnagAJob.com team, they have been doing some fantastic work matching the right people with the right jobs in the hourly space. On a side note, I'm not sure how I fit into the Defrag '08 agenda based on my new role but who knows, I'll leave that up to Eric.

Right now I'm continuing to ramp up at the new job and I look forward to be able to contribute as much as I can. So far, it has been a fantastic first few weeks. The team is intelligent, energetic and full of passion which is what I score so highly. Keep an eye out for us.

Re: user experience, great explanation

thanks for posting this, Lou -- had not seen it....very cool!

congrats on your new gig, by the way

cheers,
Graeme
www.tech-surf-blog.com
