Oh, su.pr (StumbleUpon's link shortener) gets good reviews too. You need to create Friend Lists. There are a couple ways, the easiest is this:

Click on Friends in the top blue navigation bar.
Click on Create New List.
Give the list a name, then select the friends you want to add by first starting to type in their name and they'll pop in - click on the image and it selects.
Then save.

Now, go into your Privacy settings (click Settings in the top blue nav bar, then Privacy).
Adjust which content/features gets published to which list by selecting Custom.

Also, on a different note but related to Friend Lists: on your Home Page -- you can now drag and drop your Friend Lists and the one you place at the very top above the News Feed filter will be your default view!

Hope this helps! I have a few video tutorials on my YouTube channel at youtube.com/facebookmari and my Fan Page facebook.com/marismith. Any questions let me know!

Re: Top Tips for Using Facebook for Business (Video)

By all means Silvia -- let me know where to find your thesis index!! Just brilliant. Like you, I too have been immersed in studying social media technologies for the past few years... but what fascinates me most is human behavior and being able to make a bigger difference on the planet through the use of these technologies.

Some say the world is getting smaller, I say the world is getting more connected. The raging success of social media can be attributed to our fundamental human need to know that we matter, to belong, to be included, acknowledged and validated. Sites like Facebook and Twitter make it easier than ever before to build and maintain core relationships that really add value.

I like to challenge my audiences to think about how what they say in print, audio, video can ripple out and touch people's lives - just as if you were standing on a stage with a million people who are your ideal target market. What would you want to say to them, what call to action would you inspire them to make? This is perfectly feasible with social media.

Keep up the great work!

Re: Psychologist: Facebook Makes You Smarter, Twitter Makes You Dumber

Hm, interesting analysis. [Of course, love that Dr. Alloway is from Scotland!] I think comparing Facebook to Twitter side by side in terms of memory and intelligence isn't really the full picture. Granted, just looking at Twitter streams and attempting to track threads, conversations, random bits of information could be more challenging to the brain than the "slower" experience of Facebook. But that's why we have tools like Tweetdeck, Twhirl, Hootsuite, PeopleBrowsr etc. to be able to better manage the randomness and build up micro chunks of information about specific people in what I call our "mental rolodex."

Re: About The Facebook Changes

Hey there awesomely awesome Paul!!!

I just left my $0.02 on Ed's post -- somehow methinks someone has gotten the wrong end of the stick.

I'll be uber interested to see any stats/metrics/results that show how using a Fan Page only for business on Facebook and not using one's Facebook personal Profile for strategic professional networking with key influencers, clients and prospects is better. I mean, each to his/her own, of course.

But, frankly, for me - I engage probably 80% with my friends and their profiles and maybe 20% on fan pages (Did you know you can only be a fan of 500 Pages btw). ;)

Keep us posted on the new strategy - I'm eager to know how it goes for ya!! :)

Hugs
Mari

Re: Facebook Lowering The BOOM on “5000 friends”

Wow, Ed - I just read your post after reading Lynn Terry's thought-provoking post about the whole Facebook Profile vs. Page debate. http://www.clicknewz.com/2026/

You know I love ya to bits... and I gotta completely disagree with your line of approach. I, too, have been promoting the Facebook Fan Page (blogged about it in March 2008: http://whyfacebook.com/2008/03/05/on-facebook-p...) and yet, there is so much mileage to be gained from utilizing both a personal Profile and a Fan Page(s).

I have most of my friends separated into Friend Lists and filter my News Feed this way to keep on top of important matters and nurture many key relationships. That wouldn't be possible on just a Fan Page. I see the personal Profile as a powerful medium for strategic professional networking - to see and be seen, to keep that top of mind awareness with key influencers.

I often say to my students and clients that out of 300 million users, you can "only" be friends with 5000 of them and to, therefore, think of that network as a high level mastermind in a way. Choosing who you friend (or don't) is so important. If Facebook should ever reduce the friend limit, so be it.

Re the TOS changing, this is not new news that we can't use our Profiles for commerce. The part you've highlighted above is new - and was likely added to catch the scoundrels who are literally selling Facebook friends and trying to monetize status updates directly.

I'm just sad that your post is worded in such a way to put down other marketers. I know your intentions are kind. I'm a great believer in there are no hard and fast rules for how to do anything, particularly social media. But of course, we can make up our own rules for our own playground. So, as I say, love ya to bits and I know you're an awesome leader in this arena... just had to pop my $0.02 in. ;)

Cheers,
Mari

Re: Facebook Changes Ad Ratings, Extends Top Bar

Hm - the blue nav bar extension may seem small... but I have a strong feeling it's in prep for ads or some such other monetizable use of that prime real estate! :) In any case, two thumbs up for Facebook - every little helps. I agree with your points and have found that the more visibility via social media and offline activities, the more the demand for engagement increases. I strive to respond to my @'s and DMs... but both my regular and Facebook email are most challenging to keep on top of, even with a whole team. I much prefer the efficiency of DMs! :)

As for trust, I believe that comes from making and keeping small agreements. But to your question about keeping relationships from evaporating - I really find the 80:20 rule kicks in no matter what. Studies have shown we can typically only maintain relationships with around 120-150 people. For a natural Connector that number may be double. Even so, I actually think it's not humanly possible to nurture relationships with thousands or tens of thousands 1:1... we simply have to move to 1:many which is why blogging and microblogging and speaking are so effective!! :)

Cheers
@marismith ~ I'm following you on Twitter now! Glad to meet via @Mike_Stelzner. :)

Re: Should You Use DISQUS Comment System?
