It might have been more accurate to term this something other than a "redesign," at least in your writeup. This isn't so much an aesthetics upgrade as an info-infrastructure upgrade. What data appears where has been adjusted. A redesign implies radical changes to the UI, which hasn't happened at all.

I wouldn't call it a redesign, that's all. They tweak a few things and we're supposed to get all excited. They're simply trying to recover some of the ground they lost to clutter.

So, Ben. According to your post, this feature will, somehow, carry through to third-party apps, like Seesmic & TweetDeck, right? That'll be a real bite, to be sure. Pete's exactly right about the important role commenting plays in the retweeting process. Like I said before, I champion the idea of streamlining things, so that the process is clearer for those unfamiliar with it. But ... Twitter really needs to think about incorporating the important facets before they go mucking around with things. If they don't, they'll have a firestorm of vitriol on their hands.

Just reading Pete's rebuttal ... and I agree 100%. And I hope you're right, Ben. Thanks for the information; I think that Twitter is making a step in the right direction, but they should take into account the things that make something like retweeting so great.

I think you'll see people slowly adopt it as a feature. Maybe half will at the start, then more and more as the syntax works. ANd remember, only a small minority of user retweet (Well under 10%), so you'll see a new wave of retweeting.

Messy at first? Yeah. But once they iterate and get it right people will adopt.

Me too. Occasionally it's for spelling, but mainly I use them to ensure I'm using a word in the proper context.
