I abhor labels and parties so what's wetting my political whistle at the moment is that tomorrow we are in danger of leaving ourselves one 72-year-old heartbeat away from lunacy.

That West Wing quotation is way post-Sorkin but here's a paraphrase of what he has to say about our current situation:

"Sarah Palin didn’t say “thanks but no thanks” to the Bridge to Nowhere. She just said “Thanks.” McCain can say that the transcendent issue of our time is the spread of Islamic fanaticism or he can choose a running mate who doesn’t know the Bush doctrine from the Monroe Doctrine, but he can’t do both at the same time and call it patriotic. They have to lie — the truth isn’t their friend right now. McCain decried agents of intolerance then chose a running mate who had to ask if she was allowed to ban books from a public library. It’s not bad enough she thinks the planet Earth was created in six days 6,000 years ago complete with a man, a woman and a talking snake, she wants schools to teach the rest of our kids to deny geology, anthropology, archaeology and common sense too? It’s not bad enough she’s forcing her own daughter into a loveless marriage to a teenage hood, she wants the rest of us to guide our daughters in that direction too? It’s not enough that a woman shouldn’t have the right to choose, it should be the law of the land that she has to carry and deliver her rapist’s baby too? I don’t know whether or not Governor Palin has the tenacity of a pit bull, but I know for sure she’s got the qualifications of one."

Re: Lollapalooza

I also saw you but didn't want to bug you. Because if it's "who could we nominate that might actually die of old age before we even reach the election?", McCain is most certainly the answer.

Re: George Carlin is dead.

I hate that too, but I've been really upset lately. Johnny Cash, June Carter, James Brown, George Carlin, Elliott Smith, and I can think of a dozen other greats that have died in the last few years. It makes me even more morose when I think about how my daughter doesn't have the opportunity to be inspired by some of my heroes, at least not in the same way.

Re: George Carlin is dead.

I always hate when people pretend that they're super upset when someone famous dies as if they knew the person, and that will probably happen a lot with Carlin, but I'm very sad. I watched his latest HBO special a few weeks ago and much of it deals with death. I remember thinking at the time that I hoped his body would hold up because his mind was still so sharp. With him and Hunter S. Thompson I feel like we're starting to lose the few who really got it.

Re: anyways.us

I would also be looking forward to the Black Keys, Del tha Funky Homosapien and Zach Galifianakis, who is pretty much the funniest person alive right now.

Re: A VC: As Long As We Are Rethinking Yahoo's Board

You lost me at Dave Winer.

Re: stevepoland dot net

This is also great:

http://www.sadtrombone.com/

Re: Muxtape Recommendations - Joe Lazarus

Justin says it's coming.

Re: Muxtape Recommendations - Joe Lazarus

Nope, but that would be cool. I'm not sure, but I think it's something Justin would have to implement on the site rather than something an outsider could create. Then again, maybe someone could make a hack. I need some tool to scrobble other online music too... like music blogs, for example.

Re: Muxtape Recommendations - Joe Lazarus

This is great.
