It begs the question, though, since those of us who sell services make it point to promote ourselves via our own web properties, why would we want to ignore another site that might bring in new business? Of course I haven't created a profile and I don't intend to, but I'd hate to not be considered for a job just because the person looking for a contractor wasn't looking on the sites that I already engage with.

Re: Ask Twitter, the Best Way to Find Great Answers

Brynn Evans is doing some really fascinating academic research on social search: http://brynnevans.com/blog/

Re: Would You Advertise Yourself on MyCityFaces.com?

I spent a few minutes browsing the site, and the social media reductionist in me doesn't see a need for a service industry profiling site. Profiles are not a destination, they are an extension into a network to encourage users to check out your blog / website / home base / whatever. Sufficient networks already exist (Yelp, LinkedIn), and I don't see MyCityFaces changing Internet search behavior en masse to look for service people on their site instead of Googling "San Diego $industry."

Re: Lisa Brewster | Tumblelog

Link goes to this page, which is a Citibank upsell. This is marginally better than when I thought it was a 3rd party ad, but still setting a dangerous precedent.

EDIT: Now that I'm looking at it, I'm pissed that the whole reason why I was logging into my account was to check to see if I had any included travel insurance. If it's not something I'd want to put on my laptop, I'd rather not even include it in the bags. I'm going to start sourcing one or two super nifty die cut or clear film stickers (or a button?) instead of trying to include so many different companies.

Don't get me wrong, we love and appreciate every company that has ever been kind enough to participate in the schwagging, but it's time to address the fact that we're not fulfilling what you guys want.

Getting the "other branded items" is a whole different beast, since most startups can't afford to print up that much stuff. As Roddy says below, "we're working on it," but this has definitely been the hardest demand to meet.

Regarding our latest shirts...all the feedback (that I heard, anyway) on the Pownce shirt was that it was the best one we ever sent out, and although I'm not a fan of the color of the Friendfeed shirt, it's still a service just about all our subscribers use. Part of the model (and fun) of StartupSchwag is not knowing what you're going to get, which inevitably leads to not getting your absolute favorite service each month, but we'd ideally pick companies that will be more hit than miss. Perhaps we can implement some sort of profile functionality so that we know what services you guys use the most so that we know what schwag would be most appreciated. /me sets mode #Lisa +brainstorm

I agree that there are big improvements that we can make, and I'll be dedicating some cycles to figuring out how to make StartupSchwag more valuable to a broader sample of people.

Re: Lisa Brewster | Tumblelog

Even better, the email to submit items for review is admin@company.com.

Re: Reality and a Nightmarish Kissing Blunder

Lisa, I really appreciate your comment. If writing openly about your relationships stresses you so much, perhaps you could start password protecting your posts, or (and I almost loathe to suggest it) start a private livejournal where it's easier to control who has access. I definitely don't want you to stop writing!

And if you haven't seen it, this post on the extremely public breakup of Chris Messina and Tara Hunt might really open your eyes on what it means to be open: http://www.sanfranmag.com/story/so-open-it-hurts

Re: Startup Schwag 2.0

Super job, topherchris!

Re: Lisa Brewster | Tumblelog

Test
