You have placed the discussion about our shared histories in the proper context. How do we see every person around us as created by God, “fully human, fully deserving of a life lived with the same possibility for freedom, health and well-being as the life of anyone else”, whether they be the descendants of slaves, the descendants of slave owners, descendants of serfs, members of the Black Lives Matters movement, or someone flying a Confederate flag from the back of their pickup truck. How do our words show God’s love to all people?

Re: Because ...

In a discussion on Twitter, Jim Naughton mentioned Joshua Bell and shared a link to his post about Bell and Grace

http://www.episcopalcafe.co...

Re: #NaPoWriMo 8: Road Poem 2

Part of the idea for this poem comes from William Gibson:

"Souls can't move that quickly, and are left behind, and must be awaited, upon arrival, like lost luggage."

https://www.goodreads.com/w...

Re: March 3

Actually, it wasn't about you. Vilifying them, belittling them, calling them names, are all part of failing to respect the dignity of every human being. It is failing to live up to our Baptismal Vows.

Re: The Gospel of Barry Dubya Drumpf

While I recognize there is a difference between hatred and disrespect, I believe that way too often, in our political discourse, people have crossed the line. How do we understand that line?

Perhaps Matthew 5:21-22 gives us some guidance:

"You have heard that the ancients were told, 'YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT MURDER ' and 'Whoever commits murder shall be liable to the court.' "But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, 'You good-for-nothing,' shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever says, 'You fool,' shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell.

Re: Finish Later

On becoming an Episcopalian priest:

If all goes well, I am unlikely to be an ordained Episcopalian priest for another four or five years. During this time, I am going to need to continue to work full time to support my family.

I am still in discernment about exactly what sort of calling to the priesthood I might have. I woldn't be surprised that the priesthood may look a bit different five years from now than it does today.

Because of that, I'm hesitant to predict if I am likely to end up with a full time job as a priest. However, I do think that is pretty unlikely. I am more likely to be a bi-vocational, hybrid, or missional priest, mostly supporting myself with my secular job, but also working as a priest.

In terms of Disqus or Facebook comments:

There isn't a commenting system that I particularly like. Native Drupal comments tend to attract spam and are hard to manage. Disqus does a good job of spam moderation and the comments are easier to track. However, they don't connect as nicely with social media, although I should see if there is a way to connect Disqus to social media via IFTTT or Zapier. (A quick search looks like Disqus ins't supported by IFTTT but it is supported by Zapier)

Disqus also tends to format more nicely on this version of Drupal than Facebook comments do, so I lean towards Disqus, but continue to support Facebook for comments.

Hope this helps.

Re: The Accuser

I describe some of it briefly towards the end of a spiritual autobiography that I wrote for the process. A friend posted about it on Facebook, and I responded referring to 'searching for sunday'

"But lately I've been wondering if a little death and resurrection might be just what church needs right now"

John writes about what he is leaving 'American Christianity' for saying,
"If religion it is to be worth holding on to, it should be the place where the marginalized feel the most visible, where the hurting receive the most tender care, where the outsiders find the safest refuge."

This sounds very much like the resurrection of the church that I thought you were writing about. It sounds like you, me, John, and many others, are walking along this same path, not of considering our journeys as some how above other people's journeys or seeking to escape our "own cultural situatedness and life experiences", but to transform them.

Re: Panic! While neither of us agree with the tactics of 'stealing' copies of what I understand is a free newspaper, I, for one, believe students do have a right to protest, and others should try to listen.

To me, freedom of speech includes the ability to criticize news organizations and student organizations. It sounds like you don't believe that is part of freedom of speech.

To suggest that I've injected race into a discussion about an Op-Ed about certain Black Lives Matters activists also seems extremely od. The whole discussion has been focused on race.

So, I will reflect your comment. I'm sorry that my grasp of freedom of speech is so tenuous as to include supporting the speech of those who criticize various publicactions.

Re: #DigidWriMo : Mapping

Thanks for mentioning that. Here is my response for the Pastors in TN:

As a devote Christian, I agree with part of what Pastor Wayne says, "Jesus should be our moral compass". If we look at the New Testament, we find Jesus healing and breaking bread with characters not much different than the characters in Rent. Personally, I believe that one of the best ways to get a richer understanding of the Gospel is to attend Rent, asking yourself, when Jesus told us to love or neighbors as ourselves, who did he have in mind?

Re: Coming Out as a Post Structural Christian Mystic Poet

There are a lot of things that have been going on in my life that all seem to be coming together leading me to where I am right now, things I'm still exploring. I mentioned #rhizo15, which I'm still trying to fully grasp how it has changed my thinking about learning. There are a few poetry MOOCs I've been participating in as well as a workshop on poetry at Yale Divinity School I attended recently. There was my college reunion and discussions there.

These ideas are still evolving and I greatly appreciate the interactions I'm having in comments on the blog, on Facebook, face to face and elsewhere. I hope to explore these more completely over the coming days

Re: Coming Out as a Post Structural Christian Mystic Poet

Acknowledgement of who we are is all well and good, but I question the idea that labels are just labels. I guess that is where some of my struggles to better understand post structuarlism are. Labels mean different things to different people, but there is also a certain amount of shared meaning, and this shared meaning changes over time and contexts.

What can we learn from the use of labels and how that use changes over time? I'm not sure I have an answer to that, but it is a question that fascinates me.
