And I think the lists feature is the biggest sign of brilliance that the Twitter team has shown since accidentally discovering the platform. Here is my comment:

One of the best ways to understand people's social media content/activity is to understand how it is defined by others. Though clearly this can lead to erroneous results, its otherwise an awesome style of "filtering" information on a platform like Twitter. This is great for discovery. Its pretty damn deep actually, I think people will continue to understand more of the useful applications in due time. This is what Eric Schmidt is looking for when trying to determine page rank for social media, beyond simple follower counts.

Re: louisgray.com: At 5:04 P.M. I think its safe to say more than a few people use twitter from their mobile phones. Here is a screen shot of a terribly sloppy problem which speaks for itself: http://twitpic.com/h1ayh

Re: How Twitter Could Lose The Game By Design

Steve, good point on the image size, I will reduce. Also, I agree and think Twitter's model of keeping the feature set minimal was a needed step for its growth, in order to engage all of the 3rd party business. Agreed, agreed, agreed. However, your arguments suffer from a fallacy called "Tu Quoque" which attempts to defend oneself or another from criticism by turning the critique back against the accuser. This is a classic Red Herring - attacking the size of my screenshots is entirely unrelated to any refutation of Twitter's design.

Because Twitter has such a small feature set, for whatever reason, it should be easy to put the interface together.

Re: How Twitter Could Lose The Game By Design

Oh you were clear all right. I was just thinking outloud, wondering how now home could equal timeline, a word that applies to every layout of tweets. A timeline of your tweets, a timeline of your friends tweets, or a timeline of AT&T complaints. This further suggests that there is a break down in the hierarchical structure of the navigation even in concept.

Re: How Twitter Could Lose The Game By Design

Here's one for you. Just one ordinary designer could take care of it. A great designer would make it better than normal. Windows 95 is. The puck mouse from Apple. What if you had a headache and your doctor thought the best medical solution was still a lobotomy?

This is a conversation ultimately about "branding". If you were a student studying brands in college you might ask: Why is Apple considered to be a "cool" brand and why is Microsoft considered to be a "stogy" brand? Or maybe they are not. It's all just a general perception. From my first sentence of this piece: "here are some thoughts to file under the Psychology of brand association."

Re: Misdirected Social Victims of the Antiquated Web

I got an email from msm.com the other day and I just assumed that person worked at Microsoft.

Re: Misdirected Social Victims of the Antiquated Web

Another good example is Alta Vista. I'm talking about being antiquated. The fact of the matter is that Myspace is not a well built network, its designed to make money for the site, not for the people, and in terms of interface, its literally poor.

The site is antiquated and people might be happy there, but Im suggesting these same people would likely be happier somewhere else, in a place that is better designed.

Re: Shopify » Please Log In

While the Nemerteans range in size from 5mm to over 30 metres long in the case of the European Lineus Longissimus, with reports of specimens up to 60m long, which would make it the longest animal in the world, and while the longest vertebrate on record is a female blue whale, 29.9 m long, historians have been in denial over Longcat, found to be well over 10000000 x 10 to the 1000000000 long, purportedly. I enjoy doing this, though I sometimes feel bad for being "Negative Nancy" Someone has got to call out mistakes as they happen. Early critique is better. Now only if I could get paid for doing this. ;-)

Your comment is helpful in clarifying your position. I had to think a bit about possible outs of some of the problems I mentioned. One potential thought, since there is some strong correlation to showing rankings and to causing convergence on the top rank, is not show "the most popular video" across all categories on the landing page. Instead, it would be to show the top video in what we think is the most popular category currently be tagged on the landing page. For those logged in, their landing page would be, the most popular videos in thier categories.

In the grand scheme of things: My obsession with Mothlight, by Stan Brakhage, is probably incosequential to the ranking. Eretz Nehederet, marginal, once you hit an international crowd. Gossip Girls, Important. To marketers , however, this is all very useful. So it is important to get that sort taste choices as undisturbed as possible so that they can aim at me as narrowly as possible.

Re: The New York Tech MeetUp, The Reviews

Great review, I love your academic and poetic perspective to describing design and tech.

No refutations here re: Magma from me, though I can understand your questions regarding the role in consequently fueling a popular listing of videos, while also questioning advertising in context of a business model.

To the latter, Magma's most powerful product is actually statistics and the primary source of revenue will come from selling market research. The comprehensive statics that Blip & Tube Mogul provide for their partners, for example, is an example of what people on Magma will expect for every single video, whether it's their video or not. Due to the amount of data that we are culling for each video, and for any video, including a presentation of social media activity from all over the world, we expect Magma to become one of the most freely available, comprehensive statistical engines for video in general.

To the matter of the masses, while it's the job of Magma to cull the most popular videos from around the internet, especially to provide a real time view of what people are watching and talking about right now, the users who discover, add and curate their own favorite videos, with their friends, make Magma a more likely place to find the niche videos that are, as they say, relevant to ur interests.

Re: You are SO unfollowed!

You could also use tircd + xchat, then write yourself a perl script to automatically kick anyone that talks.
