Been thinking about the business implications of focusing on algorithms vs. insight. I am experimenting with something new on my latest post; decided to record an audio companion version of for those who prefer to listen. We took the "Private Beta Open Invitations" approach because it really suited the Toluu model; discovering what your friends or people like you are reading. Once one person got in, they invited their friends and started discovering. We are still in private beta working on infrastructure changes to support a many more users. Stay tuned though...

Re: http://blog.louisgray.com/2009/04/eatwillgrow-iphone-app-lets-you-tweet.html

Cool story, but even cooler that the guy in the photo is one of my buddies, Chris.

Re: On #wemedia

Fantastic analysis Jordan. It is so true that many people focus on charity as the main way to make people's lives better, however businesses do make peoples lives better in the long run, and many do in the short run too. There will always be some companies that do not serve all consituenties equally, however consumers can vote with their dollars.

Bill Gates is doing something amazing in the non-profit world by running his foundation and projects as if they were businesses, thinking about sustainability and solving problems in an extremely rigorous way. This systems thinking is what will lead to such drastic change.

Imagine an organizations goal was to provide clean drinking water to 1 billion people. Some might say, 'lets raise money to pay for the water and get it to these people' The problem with this scenario is it is not sustainable, you run out of money, or lose interest in helping and these people no longer have clean drinking water. However, if you instead work to lower the cost of providing clean drinking water, then a for profit business would provide such a service because it would be profitable to do so, ensuring competition and a sustainable way to access this water.

Re: iPhone 4, iPhone Pro, iPhone ‘09 — whatever you call it, is it around the corner?

Good round-up of info. Phil Schiller has also noted that the general release schedule that Apple thinks about for iPhone is the June timeframe.

I would think since iPhone is the third leg of the Apple stool, they may adopt the naming scheme of the old golden goose, the mac. In such case, Macbook, and iMac do not get special names each time they refresh, and people don't have a problem buying the new versions, or even knowing that the new ones have been created. iPod has also followed a similar path. iPod Nano and such. I would expect unless they release a dramatically different form factor the name will remain.

The other issue I see with the speed boosts is how do you deal with new apps that require the faster hardware to run smoothly. Maybe it is just like the PC world where it is Buyer beware, but I hope Apple has a bit of a better policy.

I think we will see it thinner and shorter. Same screen size for sure, maybe higher resolution since the apps are resolution independent (to a point)
I think it will stay iPhone 3G, and eventually they will drop the 3G portion.

Re: louisgray.com: RSS Overload: Don't Complain, Do Something About It

Really solid advice Mike. RSS is certainly an amazingly powerful tool to have information flow to you. It can be very easy to get overwhelmed because RSS readers are built like email clients, with their constant unread nagging you. Your tips to improve GR are great.

Plus thanks for the Toluu love. We think we can help people discover new and interesting high quality feeds based on their interests and the interests of their friends.

Cheers,
Caleb
Toluu

Re: rizzn's socnets: SplitTweet: For the Truly Twitter-Addicted

Very cool, just signed up. As you pointed out, we have been working on Tagging for a while and wanted to really integrate it into the site. As Toluu grows the need for greater organization and ways to surface interesting feeds becomes more important.

The great thing about tagging feeds, is just a few tags makes the feeds infinitely more discoverable. We can't wait to see what cool recommendations we can make as more people start tagging :)

Caleb
Toluu

Re: Toluu Says “TAG…Your It!” - Tagging Feature Launches

Hey Jeff!
