Unless you were really dedicated, it was impossible to read the beginning stories or stay caught up on a series. Just like Netflix lets you go back and see every Batman movie from the beginning, you should be able to read an entire series online. If the big two would put their archives online, it'd probably upset a lot of the collectors, but I'd be willing to pay $10 a month to be able to read episode of Flash Gordon. Once they get past the scarcity issue, I think that they would attract a much wider audience.

Re: Netflix Watch Now Movies Worth Watching - Episode 6

I really like the Discovery Channel. Survivorman was one of my favorite shows until they canceled it. It was like watching a survival videoblog. I'm also really getting into Treasure Quest right now, but didn't see it listed as an option. NBC puts some of there shows up as they air, so I don't see why Discovery wouldn't want to do the same thing. They also have some pretty good geography specials, but I didn't see any listed.

Re: ThinkGeek T-Shirt

That's so funny. It's probably even better to wear around friends. Once they know you work with computers, they'll call you for free tech support at all hours of the day.

Re: Video Editing Power Tools

Great list, finding a decent converter can be really tough because of all the spammy ones out there. Do you know of any solutions that allow you to transcode into MKV? It seems like that's where the future of codecs are headed and ideally it'd be nice to keep all of my files in the same format. Right now I mostly use XviD or DivX, but the high def MKV files look amazing. I heard a rumor that at some point Microsoft was going to support the format on their Xbox, but don't know when or if it's true.

Re: Netflix Watch Now Movies Worth Watching - Episode 4

I watched Grindhouse on Watch Now last weekend and found it really enjoyable. Ironically, it's a Weinstein film, so it shouldn't be on Netflix at all, but they got it through their partnership with Starz. A little violent for some, but I thought it was great. I loved the old 70's feel to the movie. I've seen most of the movies on this list, but did just add 4th protocol and Deal of the Century to my queue. I'll probably go back and watch Serenity too, but want to watch the TV series first. Of all the films on this week's list, Clockers has to be my favorite. It's a great drama about gangs in LA. Really powerful stuff.

Re: Netflix Watch Now Movies Worth Watching - Episode 3

I've heard a lot of buzz about Friday night lights, but it's hard to want to see it when I know that the show is probably going to be canceled. I originally read the Lord of the Rings books, so I'm excited about finally being able to see the movie. It's too bad each movie is like three hours long or else I'd try to watch the whole trilogy this weekend.

Re: Netflix, why aren’t you streaming new movies?

I think that for their business model to work, they need to keep the cost of content relatively modest. The studios charge a lot for new releases which is why most of the movie downloading services have gone out of business. If Netflix draws a line in the sand and says we'll only pay X, it will force the studios to come down in price. Because they have access to queue and rating data, it helps them to pick up bargains that they know there is already demand for. Eventually, we'll see more new releases, but it will be for movies that Hollywood is trying to push vs. the big Blockbusters that people will pay more for.

Re: Your Movie Wish Is Jinni's Command

His enthusiasm for the service made me figure that I should at least try it. I too suffer from conflicting feelings over the iPod. On one hand, it's a pretty nice device, but forcing me to use iTunes is a big turn off. There have been two different times where I've purchased an iPod only to take it back once I realize how bad that software is. I'm glad that you figured out a way around the system, but it really shouldn't be that hard for consumers to use a different program. Between the strict DRM control and the bloatware that comes with it, there is a lot that Apple could do to improve the product.

Re: sMoRTy71.com: I really like the Blackberry Storm

It looks like a pretty slick phone. Have you tried out video on it yet? My next phone definitely needs to have strong video support. I don't think I mind the lack of keyboard, as long as the touchscreen is responsive.

Re: TV Premieres: What to Watch 1/4 - 1/10

Is it just me or have TV shows been pretty terrible since the writer's strike ended? On the premiering list, 13/fear is the only one that looks interesting to me. I may also end up checking out Nip/Tuck, but since I missed the early ones, it's going to have to be watched via Netflix. I am excited about 24 starting again! but I'll have to wait until next week's column to find out about that :) In the meantime, I have 5 of my Season's passes coming back this week, but because I like to pad a couple of episodes before digging into a series, my return to new TV probably won't start for another few weeks.

Re: Deal of the Day: Linksys Extender $99.99

My thought was that if you have all of your files set to automatically decode to DivX to save on the file space, then all you'd really need to do is point the folder on the DSM-320 to the folder you use to record your shows. It wouldn't let you schedule programs or even work as a formal media center application, but for $70 it'd do the trick. My guess is that the Linksys is phasing these out and that's why there was the price cut. It doesn't sound like there was a lot of demand and everything I read said that the interface was clunky. Still, media bridge, plus DVD is a winner in my book and I hope to see more sub $100 devices like it with hopefully a better menu option for consumers.

Re: TV Premiers This Week: What to Watch 9/14 - 9/20

Is it just me or is this fall TV season really disappointing? So far Fringe is the only new show that has even made it on my radar, but everything else has bombed. There have been a couple of weak sitcoms that I've watched too, but I just haven't been impressed. I'm still holding out for Knight Rider and Worst week, but am surprised at the lack of creativity in Hollywood. It's nice to have a couple of my favorites come back, but it's disappointing that there isn't more compelling content out there. Normally, my tuners are working overtime on Thursday nights, but this week I'm not recording a single show. I'm hoping that this is just a hangover effect from the writers strike, but so far the fall season is looking like a bust.
