Cherokee looks really promising. I'll have to give this a try.

Re: http://evansims.com/reviews/code-geass-lelouch-of-the-rebellion

Yeah, that definitely makes sense. It just felt weird to have so much build up and then a sudden and rather anticlimactic finale like that for the season. I am definitely enjoying R2 though. Will have a review of that in a few weeks time. Thanks for your comment!

Re: Gotham Knight • Evan Sims

Thanks!

Re: Gotham Knight • Evan Sims

Hey man, thanks for stopping by. Yeah, it's a caching bug with the WP 2.8 beta I'm running and WP-Super-Cache. Some sort of incompatibility. Unfortunately it seems to crop up every few days. I think I'm going to disable the plugin until they can get the issue fixed. Appreciate the heads up, though.

Re: Terminator Salvation

I agree on both fronts, but I'm not sure you can look at this film as just another Terminator. It really felt like they were trying to start fresh (by moving the perspective to the future, which hasn't happened before really) and introducing a "grayer" area in the man vs machine story with Marcus. I think they had all the right players, but went with a garbage script. Really sad.

I'm sure there will be a T5, bad reviews or not. The money is still green.

Re: http://evansims.com/thoughts/this-is-one-small-step-for-man

I took all my courses online and really enjoyed it. A close friend of mine took half online, half on campus. I visited the campus a couple times and thought it was really nice, but moving my freelance business was too tricky to do it that way. Plus the schedule of the online courses worked out better for me anyway.

I'd highly recommend UAT if you're thinking about going into the game industry. They have a solid program.

Re: http://evansims.com/movies/x-men-origins-wolverine

Hah. All vertical sync does is limit your frames to the refresh rate of your monitor. This was useful back in the days of CRTs, but for LCDs this is less so. Most LCDs have a refresh rate of 60. So, by enabling this you are limiting yourself to a theoretical 60 frames per second. The catch here is that (1) few machines can run WAR at a stable 60 FPS, so it doesn't really matter, and (2) by enabling vertical sync you can unlock pre-rendering. This allows the game engine and your graphics card to pre-render scenes a frame or two ahead before they're really needed. This makes for a smoother looking experience in situations where your frames are already low, such as keep/fortress/city sieges, and can sometimes be beneficial in other circumstances as well.

So, you are correct, for most games vertical sync would be a no-no; but in WAR this is a little different. If your PC is one of the few that can run above 60 FPS, don't enable it. Otherwise it's good to have.

Thanks!

Re: Adding a Bloom Effect to Warhammer

Well I am studying general programming in school. C, C++, etc. But game programming is what I kinda want to get into. Yes I'm going to try and shoot for a quality Java/OpenGL MMO that I really hope I can get off the ground. Right now with my limited programming knowledge in general (I mean I can program real well and do some advanced things, but nothing on teh level of games yet) I have to wait a bit. I'm going to shoot for a AAA Java/OpenGL game if I can get backers once I start looking. Right now I am going to try and write as much as possible on my own and then probably see if I can get EA to help me or something. I used to QA Test professionally for them, and this summer I might start working as an Intern there as a game developer, so we will see.

I plan to use Project Darkstar, Ardor3D (similar to JMonkeyEngine), and see if I can implement Quel Solaar's Verse somehow to use as my base. Still have to talk to the author of Love to see how Verse works and what limitations it has.

Re: Adding a Bloom Effect to Warhammer

Hey Alufei; small world! Are you studying game programming in school, or on your own time? I'd love to see a well-built Java/OpenGL MMO. The handful that are out there are really give the technologies a bad name.

Re: http://evansims.com/gaming/optimizing-warhammer-onlines-game-performance

It couldn't hurt to try, but you probably won't be able to get much more out of that 256MB. I would start with a very low value, something like 0.5, and work up/down from there based on the performance you're seeing. If you get crashes, or a lot of hard drive activity (indicating textures being swapped in and out of memory from the swapfile) or corruption in the appearance of textures, I'd lower it in small intervals.

Re: Brightkite Location • Evan Sims

Hi Jan; Good find, thank you!
