Just a reminder that there are a bunch of us waiting to test your import method. It's reallly REALLY important to us to be able to control and own our own data. Please, try to help us. We WANT to use Disqus, but until you have a way for us to import our comments into Word press, we just can't.

Spot on - it's about security (in the "peace of mind" sense). I was talking about how cool Disqus was at the Online Community Unconference this week and someone responded as "yeah it might be cool but I don't want to hand over a third party all my data.... which is why Passport failed".

Passport was absolutely a different thing (they wanted ALL your data and they would allow you get it out at all, ever), but the feeling that a "turn my data over" service generates are the same. So really, without having EASY, any-user ways to move data in and out (no XML files don't count), Disqus finds itself competing against years of negative perception from sites like Passport, or stories like Margaret's.

Personally, I don't think the Disqus team should add any new functionality to place Disqus into additional platforms unless they launch an import/export tool alongside it. It's the ONLY way to showcase what you've said before - that you're not trying to own the data.

All that said, I'm waiting (not so) patiently to help beta test the WP importer! :)

Just for the record -- I think this is a huge deal for WP users as that's the main reason I stopped using disqus on my blog -- I was just too uncomfortable with *my* data being off site. I had the unfortunate experience with Wordpress.com eating a 3 year old blog of mine for TOS violations -- right or wrong on their part -- I lost 100% of my original writings. So perhaps you can understand my paranoia surrounding allowing a free service to hold and control my data.

Well, yes, you CAN export your comments, but if you're an independent WordPress blog, then you CAN'T import them back in as the Wordpress RSS import tool only imports POSTS, not comments and my hours long search for a tool to do this has proven to be fruitless.

If you know of a way to import them back into Wordpress, then I'll be thrilled to read about it.

I like Disqus, it's easy to use and hasn't put off any commentators, but I'm truly uncomfortable with my data being out of my control. Also, as others have pointed out elsewhere, you cannot edit a comment for things you wouldn't want, only delete it entirely. That's a no-flyer with me.

It's for those reasons that I've made the decision to deactivate it on my blog.

I can certainly understand and respect that decision on your part, Sailor. I know my family has been scattered to the 4 winds for many years thanks to members being in the military, etc, so having a centralized place to "gather" even if only virtually, can keep families together and in touch.

I maintain a blog that is solely for my family and certain close friends and there we manage to stay up to date with what is going on with each other. Even my 85 year old mother writes comments on the blog!

Yes, we have a son and grandchildren in Ohio right on the Ohio river. Thankfully, they are OK at this time, but if the rain doesn't let up, Chris' store might be flooded.

Mr. Pappagiorgio, Well, *they* say that Nadal is the greatest clay court player of all time and that it's just Federer's bad luck to be the best all-surface player at the same time as there is such a fantastic clay court aficionado in the game. Since tennis seems to be a young person's game, it doesn't help that Nadal is younger than Federer.

Basketball is not my game, so I'll leave the aspirations of Celtic vs. Lakers fans to the masses.

Gas pricing is going to be a cross to bear for some time to come. I don't think anything WE do is going to change what they are and what they will be. Either some inventor is going to have to come up with a totally different fuel to power transportation with that cars, trucks and planes can easily be transitioned over to or a previously undiscovered field of it in the free world will have to come to light. For the environment's sake, I hope for the first option, but for my wallet's sake will take either :wry grin:

Kelly - LazyDBA has been a god-send over the past few months. You can search their archives for past stuff. Lots of really smart guys and gals there who are very generous with their time and talents.

No, Oracle DBA's generally look down their noses at SQL DBA's and sometimes it's vice versa as well. The LazyDBA group has both a SQL Server group and an Oracle group so you might be able to sweeten him up a bit by passing on this great resource.

LazyDBA? That's one I haven't heard about. Since it looks like I'm heading for the de facto SQL Server DBA position at our place, I'm sure that will come in handy. (We already have an Oracle DBA. He doesn't play well with others.)

Ha! That's a great one, Kelly! Thanks for the tip -- I'll check out that site. I already do LazyDBA which gives me a lot of good information -- an amazing group of people on that list and was using a forum that I can't remember the name of now, but haven't in some time.

No, no tequila talk :) this theme out of the box has a leaf for the header and the comments were green. I changed the comments to the same color as posts as that was too much green, then made a custom header image to replace the leaf. I love my new eye :P
