I'm really not sure why "As I Lay Dying" is always the first Faulkner that seems to be taught in classes... I'm partial to "The Sound and the Fury" and the Snopes trilogy myself.

It's not that so much. It's hard to explain.

I guess it was just so over-hyped to me, that I expected something phenomenal, especially coming from the South. Now everyone who likes him gives me the whole "Oh, you probably just ~don't understand~." and I guess that's the case, but I'd like to know what I'm not understanding.

As I Lay Dying might just be particularly uneventful and not nearly as poignant as I was led to believe it was. I'm not excited or affected by any of the characters, anything they do or think and aside from being of a familiar dialect, the style of writing isn't anything I haven't seen done better.

Faulkner's my all-time favorite author, but I'd never argue that everyone should love his stuff -- it really does require complete attention, and 2009 is less than conducive.

I envy your lovely Pacific beaches, and was happy to stop at a couple during last week's whirlwind tour. All I could do was walk around and shoot pictures, as I had my worky clothes on.
