Just finished reading "Beer School: Bottling Success at the Brooklyn Brewer"... very interesting first-hand account of what it takes to build a brewery. When the two founders first started out, everyone thought they were crazy to name and launch a brewery in Brooklyn. Hard to have much vision if most people live life with their eyes mostly closed. The Brooklyn beer guys battled it out and and were a key part of Brooklyn's renaissance.

Here in Toronto, we have quite a number of small (nano) breweries opening up and the shared sense of community and camaraderie is amazing. If you are a local brewer who isn't engaging with the community, you are screwed. A few beers that are now being commercially brewed are recipes from local homebrewers. Lots of local beer pride!! Cooperation and engagement over competition makes a big difference. Hopefully it continues.

Yes... I believe we are in the minority. But then again, a lot of the bands we like usually put together an album worth of great music that you wouldn't want to cherry pick over.

Yes... I need to take a listen to that show with Marie-Pierre Arthur. She has such a great voice.

if you do get a chance, check out the Barr Brothers on June 2nd. As good as they sound on record, they are even better live!

And as a side note, CBC Radio does an incredible showcasing Canadian talent! You can pull every other station off the air except CBC Radio 1/2/3! :)

I would agree it's a geek's solution, although Subsonic has now become much easier to setup. As for Amazon, they are reaching out to the majority who are either lazy or couldn't care to go DIY.

Yep, I have setup a Subsonic server and have also played around with Simplify Media (until Google bought them and shut them down).

For anyone technically inclined or curious, it's not too hard to get it up and running. Takes a bit of patience... but I would say as music and geeks, we are the minority.

Amazon (and Google and Apple) will make it drop-dead simple for the average music consumer who doesn't have a mego-sized library of music. They'll mainstream what we've already had access to for quite a few years.

Yeah, that would be great if they allowed access to the API but they probably won't because of pressure from the labels who fear that it will lead to it being abused/tampered with. With proper authentication and API keys, I'm pretty certain it can be managed well.

Love what you guys are doing with Tomahawk... is there a private way to get in touch to chat about ideas/features?

Thanks! I'm amazed at how an idea you guys had and a weekend hack session has led to where you are today!!

BTW... the DM and adding straight from the playlist features are great! No longer have to see Twitter streams cluttered with artist/playlist requests.

Interesting perspective... not sure what a day really makes because people will download regardless. And usually they are either casual fans or just curious listeners. I'm certainly not condoning any of this behaviour, just trying to understand it.

What I really wonder if they released a day early to handle/spread the expected server load...

And when will bands and/or their management teams ever learn? Maybe they should control the stream by hosting and protecting on servers they manage and not allow 3rd party sites to post independent streams, or get these sites using an embeddable stream the band can shut down if required. There are enough tools/services that can be used that are pretty damn air tight when it comes to attempted stream downloading.

Regardless and to your point... supporting the arts is really what it should be about!

I second Aidan on using AceVPN which is rock solid. UK'/US/France servers, fast, cheap (in comparison to other services I've tried) and always reliable.
