No money was handed over, all nomads were let go after documents were checked. It was believed they were working illegally FOR the co-working space. Once it was clear that they weren't staff, all was fine. Unlike most articles on the matter, the one you linked to even explains that it was a misunderstanding.

So once again, name me a time when a digital nomad has been deported form Thailand.

The Thai government is already on record stating that digital nomads are allowed to operate on tourist visas as the existing system is not compatible to this sort of work. It is clear that they do not take jobs away from the locals and they bring money into the country, something the locals are desperate for give that Thai tourism is taking a huge hit after the Russians stopped coming.

There are almost a dozen co-working spaces throughout Thailand that are operating fine with zero hassle from the authorities.

The digital nomad community is extremely tight and as soon as something bad happens, everyone will know about. So far, the practice is accepted and those who are DNs in the traditional sense are fine. If there were actual arrests, the community would avoid the country like the plague.

If you're going to criticise a way of life and paint a picture of an evil country, back it up with actual facts.

Re: The 13 best places in the world to work remotely

"the police and immigration regularily crack down on shared workspaces where foreigners work openly"

Please name one time in Thailand when this has happened to the type of people who this article is targeted at and actually has resulted in deportation.

Re: The 13 best places in the world to work remotely

Well, given that the data is partially crowd sourced and partially from reputable stats, you can submit your own numbers to the site to fix the picture. Carriers don't want their crew checking if devices are emitting radio signals or not. They have enough time dealing with idiots who have their seats reclined and tray tables down.

This is the same reason why some carriers choose to ban e-readers during these times, knowing full well that they are about as harmful to the plane as the common hearing aid. If it looks like it is an electronic device, turn it off for the next 15 minutes. Its not the end of the world. It is not the flight crew's job to work in the grey. They have limited time and resources so they need to be black and white when it comes to decision making.

Also, the ban isn't solely based on RF interference. It was believed that some electronic devices emitted too much EM radiation or could fail when in use. Sure, this isn't much of an issue these days due to regulations in the electronics industry, but there still are devices out there that have dodgy internals that may cause issues. One such example are knock-off lithium ion batteries that have a higher percentage of failing. Sure, that percentage is still incredibly low, but its a variable they feel like they need to control regardless.

Aside from that, one of the more compelling reasons why these devices are not to be used during takeoff/landing is so they can control the passengers. A distracted passenger may become a liability, resulting in injury, death or worse, lost money to the carrier.

One of the main reasons why these rules are now being relaxed is that in-flight wifi is becoming a huge revenue raiser for carriers. At least in North America. The gain in revenue outweighs the risk so change is happening. Once someone figures out how to bring cheap wifi to Australian flights, we'll see the ban rapidly vanish from our carriers.

There is no law in Australia banning mobile phones on planes. The regulation allows the decision to be made by the carriers themselves. In the end it is always about money.

PS. planes have had the no electronic signs replace the no smoking signs for years now. It just takes a while for carriers to update their fitouts. Thats the same reason why you see portable CD players and Furbies on the flight safety cards. Costs money to change things, might as well leave them as they are until absolutely necessary.
