Tara also dropped me a note about signing up for Lijit. I had some problems and my Lijit Widget wasn't showing anything. She contacted the developers and got the problem fixed before I even had to pursue anyone to fix it.

That is a great line. I've got a different problem. I am loving writing my novel, I am rushing through it. Am I writing it too quickly? Will I run out of storyline before I reach 50,000 words? I can't wait to get to various parts of the story.

Your phrase provided me hope. "If you can't put down writing it, hopefully, readers won't be able to put down reading it."

So, I'm at 9,850 words. I hope to crank out a lot more today, but I know I should put down the novel and spend some time with my family. It is my wedding anniversary today.

A different perspective: I think Linden Labs has bungled this fairly badly. Their policy is unclear and self-contradictory. The key issue is, how do we understand currency in Second Life. Is it a limited right that Linden Lab retains discretion over how it is used? If so, then they have every right to arbitrarily and capriciously restrict the way people exchange that right. Yet at the same time, they are allowing "banks" that show that they are registered with a banking authority (which has jurisdiction over currencies, not over 'limited rights') to continue operations.

Linden Lab needs to decide whether the Linden Dollar is a right which they can arbitrarily control, which reduces its value, or a valid proxy for a currency. They can't have it both ways.

My two daughters go to college in Virginia and I regularly try to add a little bit of the Blue Ridge Parkway on my trip, even though it is a little out of the way and slows down my trip a lot.

Robert,

I had assumed, apparently incorrectly, that at a minimum, the mail.php code would be installed as part of PHP. It was on all of my machines.

To get around the problem, I've updated the tarball to include the mail.php routines. If you download the latest tarball and try again, I have hopefully fixed the problem. Let me know.

Various things to look at:

Try viewing the source of the page. When I first tried to set it up, I found lots of useful diagnostics hidden in the source of broken pages. If you aren't getting sufficient diagnostics, try changing the debug level in the config.php file

$config['db']['debug'] = 5

That works well for me.

However, based on the message, it sounds like the problem might be something like end of line characters stuck on the end of one of the files by editing the file on Windows or something like that. It's another place to look.

Note to self, and anyone else interested. My latest change was to util.php to change the header to include the favicon.ico file from the appropriate theme directory. In addition, I cleaned up my tweak to subscribe.php as well as the mail.tpl.php file I created to take advantage of already defined laconica functions.

Next to-dos: get the latest updates from darcs and start looking at additional themeing.

Hmm... Looks to me like it should work. However, rewrite rules aren't an area I'm good with, and since I'm running this as a subdirectory of my Drupal site, I haven't really tried to tweak the rewrite rules.

If you follow the link, you'll see it isn't all that much. I've only gotten about 300 visits over the past day. The clustermap shows everyone who has visited over the past six months, which is about 30,000 I've bene on clustrmaps since very early on, so they've tracked nearly 170,000 visits over time.

So, how do I do it? A few key things. First, I've been around for years, so I've built a track record. Second, I try to respond as much as possible to people. Third, I try to hit a lot of different niches instead of staying in just one niche. Finally, I visit various community building sites like MyBlogLog, EntreCard and many others.

Like working with people on the platform, it is all about getting involved in the community

Actually, as far as I can tell, dataobject.ini is not used. I've never changed it so it has default values from the original darcs....

I've deleted the file altogether and it doesn't change things.

I would much rather see my changes in the central tarball. I submitted my changes on the laconi.ca developers list and they were ignored. Instead of simply discarding them, I saved them here.

There is also another reason for my tarball being different from the central tarball. Mine includes all the dependencies. This helps out people who can't install PEAR or load code from other sources. My understanding is that the central repository doesn't want to include dependent code. I can understand this since for some the code would be redundant, or perhaps even conflicting.

Since it seems like there isn't a very active developer community for laconi.ca yet, the procedures and tools for submitting an managing changes doesn't seem to be in place yet.

I'm holding off on any serious or significant development until those issues are resolved.

Random thoughts.

Hmm, I'll have to see if I can run Laconica on a Windows based server. Since it uses db abstaction, maybe I can even try it with Microsoft SQL Server.

I did find that I had updated an old htaccess file, so I've redone it and it looks like it is working nicely now. For anyone interested, the tarball has been updated.

However, Drupal/Disqus seems to be acting a bit weird right now, so some people might not see this comment.

Various hints: First, the dataobject.ini doesn't seem to make any difference. What matters is the
$config['db']['database'] line in config.php That is what is used to access the database.

If you are still having problems, set
$config['db']['debug'] to 5
Then when the page comes up, view the source. The error messages may not display in your browser, but they should display in your source.

If you get an error message about the schema, you should either rename the stoica.ini file in classes directory to db.ini (in my case, my db is named smartcam_laconica, so I have a smartcam_laconica.ini). Or, you can try changing it in the config.php file

There is a commented out line,
$config['db']['ini_your_db_name'] = ...
If you uncomment it and change your_db_name to match your dbname, it is supposed to work....
e.g. I should use
$config['db']['ini_smartcam_laconica'] ...

I'll try that later.
