Once given a choice, the majority of people go for "fun" first. :)

Re: Jones’ Big Ass Truck Rental & Storage

At first I thought, "Oh, just like old Chicago gems like Victory Auto Wreckers," but then the phone number came on: 708 is the south burbs of Chicago. Someone's paying homage! And what I never got around to saying because I can go ON AND ON AND ON is this: It does get better! Things become more familiar, you start forming new relationships locally. But it may feel like it takes forever because you'll be aware of the void you need to fill. Sucks.

The other bit of advice I have is to make sure you take care to differentiate those who become your real friends and those that are just scenesters who are happy to see you around. I had my suspicions about who was who verified when my appendix burst; real friends visit you in the hospital. :) But I don't suggest that method of investigation!

Re: the evidence is really piling up

Bonus info! So - I have no idea what your situation is, other than through glimpses you've posted here. I can only guess.

I do relate, though, in that four years and some change ago, I picked up from Chicago, where I had lived most of my life (all of my life that counted, really -- pre-seven-years-old doesn't count much), and moved to San Francisco.

It was hard. I had no idea. I felt groundless and floating for at least a year. Probably more like a year and a half. This, despite the fact that I had friends and it didn't take me long to find a job. But some friends flaked once I moved out to where they were. My life had drastically changed, and I was focusing primarily on things that I hadn't focused on so much before, and other areas of focus dropped out entirely. After a while, I was left with a feeling of "who the hell am I now? What happened to the me before?"

While I had had glimpses of something being off before then, things got thrown out of whack last year in a way that made me spend a lot of 2007 taking stock, thinking about what I was doing and what I hadn't been doing, and the reasons why. And honestly, now, I'm feeling great, and I'm excited again, but it took too long to get there.

Before I ramble on too long, what I'm trying to say is: I think it's absolutely natural that you're going to feel different and displaced after calling Seattle home for so long, and then making what was basically a cold jump to New York City. And in doing that, you're going to get disoriented because you inevitably expend your energy in new ways, and that takes getting used to. A lot of who you are, or who you think you are, is tied up in various communities in Seattle, I'm sure, and now you have to start clean over by looking for equivalents (which is hard) or become someone else by branching out in different directions (which is also hard). Believe it or not, your current state of uncertainty is exactly where you should be, all things considered.

Re: the evidence is really piling up

So apparently, sifting through the YouTube comments, this took place at a court house, and the woman talking was saying how a girl named Terry, who had died in a car accident, was under the influence of pot at the time she had been driving. The woman who through the punch was Terry's mother. If that's true, I kind of understand where Mom was coming from; a lot of grief and then having to deal with court and these other women who couldn't show some compassion for the family.

Still, damn, what a sound that made.

Re: FYI, JPG Magazine thinks pubic hair is genitalia

Heya! This is Jason S. from 8020 Publishing and JPG.

I think you're absolutely right, we do need to be more clear about what we mean by "no genitalia photos." To give you some back story, that got added to the guidelines around the time we launched the Beauty Redefined theme for Issue 10, which was sponsored by Suicide Girls. We weren't looking for SG-esque pictures but man, we got a bunch. A lot of us took turns watching what was getting uploaded and deleting that which was over the top. I dubbed it "genitalia watch" and we perhaps got focused on that word, which for all I know may have influenced how the additional guideline got written.

It's something we've been thinking about the last couple of weeks here in the office (as you're not the only photographer to bring this up!). While I don't think anyone working on JPG would mistakenly think that all nudity is explicitly sexual, we do have people from all over the world, and of all age groups, using the site. That doesn't give us any specific legal concerns, but it does become very difficult to draw the line between what's artful nudity and what's pornographic. Combine that with the fact that there's only a handful of us here able to sort through every photo that gets posted to JPG, and it becomes impossible to make these kinds of editorial decisions without drawing a hard line somewhere.

Christi posted a clarification to the blog, but of course not everyone reads the blog, so in 2008 we intend to have clearer rules and guidelines up on the site, and hopefully better communication when a photo gets deleted.

Thanks for sticking with us! And for voicing your concern. We're always trying to improve on what we do and how we do it.
