Regarding the "What do you do?" question being interpreted as "What's your job?" : a very good point, and may I also suggest the answer I usually give: "For fun or for profit?" Once given a choice, the majority of people go for "fun" first. :)

At first I thought, "Oh, just like old Chicago gems like Victory Auto Wreckers," but then the phone number came on: 708 is the south burbs of Chicago. Someone's paying homage! (And I just checked, Big Dog Eat Child's based in Alsip, IL so that clenches it.)

So I'm currently in Tacoma, and Thursday night after I arrived and got settled, one of my friends asked if I had ever seen this movie called "Creatures from the Pink Lagoon," as apparently the director is a friend of a friend.

It is now clear that I must see this movie.

Yeah, I hear what you're saying re: friends versus not-so-muchers. Over the last week I've decided to just be content with biding my time, giving myself a lot of space, and reducing my expectations somewhat. Just let things happen as they will, and not seek out some social agenda.

This is a new chapter, and I can relish it.

And by the way, you give absolutely spectacular bed hair. Amazing. I'm in awe.

You're quite welcome! And what I never got around to saying because I can go ON AND ON AND ON is this: It does get better! Things become more familiar, you start forming new relationships locally. But it may feel like it takes forever because you'll be aware of the void you need to fill. Sucks.

The other bit of advice I have is to make sure you take care to differentiate those who become your real friends and those that are just scenesters who are happy to see you around. I had my suspicions about who was who verified when my appendix burst; real friends visit you in the hospital. :) But I don't suggest that method of investigation!
