Essentially, he advocates versioning the fragments and letting the older fragments fall out of memcache.

See http://blog.leetsoft.com/2007/5/22/the-secret-t...

Re: Improving Magento Performance

Not currently but that is an option.

Re: Flickr rolling out new search?

I think this will make Flickr image discovery that much better.

Now if Flickr will allow you to add a comment from the same interface, that would be fantastic.

Re: Does Anyone Use Chrome?

It is if you are willing to live on the edge. Some versions may not work very well but the one I am using works like a champ.

There's no Flash support right now but I can always hop back to FF for that. Personally, I held off the iPhone due to the lack of a keyboard and I've been a Treo user for many years and IMO this is a good attempt. There are obviously some rough edges and it remains to be seen how quickly they will iterate to fix things that come up. I think that will be key as well as the App Catalog in the long run.

Re: You Won't See The Palm Pre On Me

There is going to be a GSM version. I was trying to get Varien to host the repo on github but they were lukewarm on the idea.

Part of the problem is the strange way they do svn, I can't seem to get git-svn to switch from the 1.2 to 1.3 branch without freaking out. Maybe you know how to do this.

I'll probably just refresh the tree at some point and publish the diff again.

Re: Compiling Drizzle on Ubuntu

Yes, you have to add the proto buffers package from the developers PPA as well as libdrizzle. Nor is there a way to delete an account, which is important since you are holding on to a user's twitter password (OAuth can't get here soon enough).

So far it seems to work nicely. The best way is to test all 3 with your app and pick whatever works the best.

I've been working on Magento (www.magentocommerce.com) over the last couple of days and it appears that XCache and APC return about the same level of performance. Surprisingly, memcache does not improve performance in this case but I am sure this is more a reflection on how the app works and not memcache itself. Unfortunately, it looks like this is just a really slow app for now (so slow it makes Rails look like a rocket).

PS. Magento uses Zend under the hood so that may be a factor.

Re: How FriendFeed uses MySQL to store schema-less data - Bret Taylor's blog

Well, what it really boils down to is the classic argument of build vs. buy. A lot of organizations do not have the programming skillset nor the time to implement non-commercial solutions (mostly because it is viewed as an operational expense rather than a revenue generation source).

So when there is say a hypothetical product that cost $25k that nets millions in ROI and can be rolled out in a month or two, that's what would tend to be used.

That is not to say there is no role or use for MySQL and friends. Free goes a very long way when you are bootstrapped. It all depends on the use case and organization.

Re: How FriendFeed uses MySQL to store schema-less data - Bret Taylor's blog

Cool.
