You're right, but there are other ways from Twitter to make money without taxing their users. For instance, Twitter receives a large amount of Traffic every day, one small, well-placed ad could provide a very valuable source of income. (http://www.alexa.com/data/details/traffic_detai...)

Exactly! I'm not sure why people keep saying Twitter should start charging for service (in one way or another), it's not going to fix their problems.

FriendFeed isn't going to kill anything, it depends on all these services for it's content. Without the services providing the content, there would be no FriendFeed.

I think if FriendFeed added a chat-style feature, it might be able to
take a certain subsection of Twitter's user base away -- but I still
think there are benefits to Twitter as a standalone app, and the
primary one is that it only does one thing. FriendFeed is about
comments on links and other content, but Twitter is just about short
messages and IM-style chat.
