Great post. It seems like a long wait and a lot of time and money invested, and I'm struggling to find the business benefit (even in the long term) for Google.

News used to be a choice between several monologues, and is now quickly becoming one giant conversation. As that happens, news starts to be more of a meritocracy, and the built in advantage that the news organizations one had is diluted. I think a side effect of this is that there is less need for a huge diversity in news coverage. You can get all the perspective you need via secondary sources that have shown merit.

Most of these arguments from newspaper people seem targeted not at the generic question "how do news organizations survive and prosper" but at the question "how do we keep as many reporters employed as possible?"

Luca - I started using TweetDeck, and it really helps me organize the flow of conversations by separating people I follow into columns (industry, personal friends, etc). I also like the feature that you can have a search and it will pop up all new tweets related to that topic (say ecomm).

Without it, the Twitter stream isn't nearly as useful. As you correctly point out there is less value in more noise.

Congrats to the Twilio team on closing the round. I have a sandbox account, but haven't had the chance to play with their API. I would also encourage web developers to check out the company I work for, IfByPhone. We have a simple API as well, and you can build full on IVR using our GUI. http://is.gd/lBUY

There are a number of companies out there doing very interesting things with Voice (Jaduka and Jajah for example), and making it more accessible. Good luck to Jeff and his team in the future.

In actuality, this is not the first Voice Broadcast app in the iPhone App Store. IfByPhone released one months ago.

I agree it ain't easy, and it'll be a while before I bother getting the API key setup. But IMO that's more on the Facebook side than it is on the DIsqus side. I sorta wish that the API Key would be handled similar to how FriendFeed does, which is to say, each user gets one, across the board. Instead of the goofy creating a dummy application thing.

If you do not already have a Facebook API key, the best way (right now) is to fill out a “Create Application” form and use http://disqus.com/ as the Callback URL.

I really dig PHP. I am close to finishing a screen pop for inbound phone calls via Twitter (and will shortly follow it with a Google Talk screen pop as well). Just need to get some more data uploaded to my database. Love PHP.

That's a common concern. I'm not really hung up on that, because I could lose the WordpRess comments to database issues or whatnot as well.

I love Disqus since it makes conversation easier. Plus, now I have one place where people can go to to see everywhere I've commented. I can find new blogs by tracking where other interesting commenters participate.

Congratulations to Ribbit on coming out of Beta. Ribbit seems like an excellently run company. The fact that BT bet $105 million on them is a major vote of confidence not only in them, but also for the industry as a whole.

Also, it's great to see them offering a bring your own network approach. I work for IfByPhone, and I can tell you that we are very open. We have free developer accounts (http://public.ifbyphone.com/services/developer-api), and our API allows anyone who can write web applications to add voice to their arsenal. So a web developer could literally add voice to their application within a few days with no prior experience in voice.

If you check us out, I think you will be very pleased with our level of openness.

That really depends on what you want to do and your background. There are lots of companies out there that have or are in the process of providing APIs to front end their telephony technology.

If you are an enterprise company, you have all kinds of options. Smaller to medium sized businesses can look at IfByPhone - which has low price points, and easy integration. But like i said, it really depends more on what you are trying to accomplish.

I grew up in a town slightly bigger than Wasilla. Our mayor had a second job selling furniture just to make ends meet. I wouldn't count Mayor of a small town too strongly as qualifications for backing up the leader of the free world. Just saying.

Fred, that frustration you're feeling? That's *exactly* why she was picked, not just because of her looks. In one of my long ago History classes, I read a theory about elections from Elihu Root (a cabinet member for Teddy Roosevelt). It's not who wins the issues that wins the election. It's who defines what the issues are.

The longer we talk about Palin's vs. Obama's qualifications, the more McCain eventually wins that argument. McCain still wins the experience argument, so as long as we talk about that and not the issues Obama is strong on, the stronger McCain gets.
