If someone tweets about getting followers, I'm not going to follow.

Recently I noticed that there are people with 3000+ followers who have only tweeted 10 times - how is that possible? Those 10 tweets must have been amazing ;-)

Did you just start using Disqus? I don't remember seeing it here before. I usually just say that I fix broken stuff ;-) And I've found it difficult to explain twitter to people who have never used it - although if I mention that it has helped me find work, then they suddenly see the value.

I don't think it's ever cool to disparage networks that we think are lame that others enjoy. Fortunately it was only by a couple of days :-) It looks great.

A number of my clients have told me that they have worked with designers and tech types who refuse to speak with them on the phone. I don't understand this at all. Talking on the phone can usually clear up an issue much faster than an email. When I worked in tech support I would often call people who emailed in for support because it was a faster way to fix the problem and close out the case. The risk I ran is that the individual would ask more questions about a different topic :-) I suppose the designer could have a previous experience where giving out his number caused calls at all times of the day - I had a client like that and I dropped her as a client.

It is definitely important to have an idea what features who want before getting started as you learned. Personally, I find it difficult to start a project without some sort of guidance.

Great job - I'm excited for you.

Re: Top 10 Reasons to Follow Someone on Twitter

I follow those with similar interests, those that I can learn from, "friends" and people that might hire me. I started a new policy recently of following anyone who follows me unless it is an obvious spammer - it helps me find freelance work. So, my article ideas usually come from things I've been trying out on my test site or from questions that people ask me.

Other ideas pop into my head all the time - I just have to be sure to write them down immediately or I won't remember them. I have over 70 drafts right now containing various things that I might want to write about. Even if I don't write them all on the weekend, I usually plan out what I'm posting that week in advance.

Re: 35 Tips for getting started with social media

After reading this article today I did some research on permalink structure but did not come up with a definitive answer. I do use yoast.com for a lot of my WordPress information and in one of his SEO articles he recommended only using the post name. But I am not clear as to why it would be better - I should probably ask him. There is a plugin you can use if you do decide to change your permalink structure - I installed it when I changed mine and didn't have a single problem. This is the plugin http://urbangiraffe.com/plugins/redirection/ and if you are interested in the yoast article it is http://yoast.com/articles/wordpress-seo/

Re: Six Alternatives To Twitter

Hi Mike,

Did you consider including posterous? You've covered it all. It actually seems exhausting to me :-)

I agree with Mark that there are differing views on permalinks. I actually prefer to remove the date from mine and use only the post title.

And I was really happy to see your mention of diigo. While I still prefer delicious, diigo does allow you to bookmark to all three sites like you mentioned. When I first started doing that it was more for bookmark insurance - if one site disappeared my bookmarks would still exist somewhere else. Only later did I think of the social aspect of it.

I am, however, often hesitant to share my own stuff. You suggested sharing your own content in Google reader. Is that really an acceptable practice?

On a side note, I am slowly trying to spend more time with friendfeed :-)

Re: Are You Rewarding Your Users? I'd say they don't really have any problems then. There are a lot of people losing their homes and their jobs. There are hard-working people who aren't paid a livable wage and don't know how they are going to afford heat this winter. These are the people who should be freaking out not the people who might have to put off purchasing an iPhone.

I'm not trying to be negative here - I just thing the tech community as a whole needs to put things in perspective.

Re: Technology and Mutlitasking, Does Education Need an Upgrade?

Whenever I visit I always end up commenting on 2 or 3 articles :-) Perhaps it is an age difference but I was not taught to multitask while growing up. I can do it but find it distracting and that it decreases my productivity. Why is it increasingly becoming a required skill when study after study shows that it makes us less productive and more prone to make mistakes (and that isn't just old people but everyone)?

This link is just one example that I found

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/03/25/business/25mu...

Re: Bad Advice from Wired Magazine, “Quit Blogging!”

Thanks for writing about this, Jacob. I saw the Wired article yesterday and completely dismissed what they were saying.

It's amuses me that they are telling me to stop blogging on a blog. It's like when people announce they are leaving twitter forever on twitter. And I should stop blogging because Calacanis did? Puhleez ...

The article also smacks of early adopter-itis. "Well, we were blogging 4 years ago and now it's becoming mainstream so it's time to move on."

There is an awful lot of crap out there and spammers and trolls but that doesn't mean we should stop what we're doing - especially if we enjoy it.

And no one has ever left a comment on my site telling me to suck mccain's ass. I have tried and tried to use friendfeed more but it just hasn't been for me so far.

Like you, I've had many blogs through the years but they have mostly been casual things - links to funny sites, a site for my daughter. My current blog was started about the same time as yours and I have taken it a lot more seriously. And it's been amazing to meet interesting people, build a community and interact. Though it's been a lot more work than I originally anticipated.

I'm glad the Social Media Marketing project introduced us to each other.

Re: Jim's Tumblr - The Ay-rabs!

I seriously hope that they don't vote - ugh - that made me sick.
