I used it last year but had major issues with it following my switch to Thesis, for some reason. New 1.5.1 and WP 2.8 seems to have done the trick. I'm curious how the social reactions work out as well as the Twitter and FB Connect.

I'm going to monitor for a few weeks in regards the spam issue I used to have with DISQUS, but so far looks okay.

Re: Why Your Numbers Game is BS

Supersize my followers - LOL

I used to be very generous about who I followed back but I've reached my BS limit on twitter. If someone tweets about getting followers, I'm not going to follow.

Recently I noticed that there are people with 3000+ followers who have only tweeted 10 times - how is that possible? Those 10 tweets must have been amazing ;-)

Did you just start using Disqus? I don't remember seeing it here before. Any reason why?

Re: "You have been rate limited. I usually just say that I fix broken stuff ;-) And I've found it difficult to explain twitter to people who have never used it - although if I mention that it has helped me find work, then they suddenly see the value.

I don't think it's ever cool to disparage networks that we think are lame that others enjoy. Fortunately it was only by a couple of days :-) It looks great.

A number of my clients have told me that they have worked with designers and tech types who refuse to speak with them on the phone. I don't understand this at all. Talking on the phone can usually clear up an issue much faster than an email. When I worked in tech support I would often call people who emailed in for support because it was a faster way to fix the problem and close out the case. The risk I ran is that the individual would ask more questions about a different topic :-) I suppose the designer could have a previous experience where giving out his number caused calls at all times of the day - I had a client like that and I dropped her as a client.

It is definitely important to have an idea what features who want before getting started as you learned. Personally, I find it difficult to start a project without some sort of guidance.

Great job - I'm excited for you.

Re: Top 10 Reasons to Follow Someone on Twitter

I follow those with similar interests, those that I can learn from, "friends" and people that might hire me. I started a new policy recently of following anyone who follows me unless it is an obvious spammer - it helps me find freelance work. Recently, however, I've had a number of followers with very very different interests than mine - I'm almost afraid of disappointing them with my liberal smart-ass ways ;-)

I can't imagine using Twitter to find a boyfriend but I suppose it's happened.

Re: Jim's Tumblr - John Cleese’s thoughts on Sarah Palin. “Michael...

"She's like a parrot"

Re: Thoughts On Tennant and the Doctor

Thanks for writing this up. So, my article ideas usually come from things I've been trying out on my test site or from questions that people ask me.

Other ideas pop into my head all the time - I just have to be sure to write them down immediately or I won't remember them. I have over 70 drafts right now containing various things that I might want to write about. Even if I don't write them all on the weekend, I usually plan out what I'm posting that week in advance.

Re: 35 Tips for getting started with social media

After reading this article today I did some research on permalink structure but did not come up with a definitive answer. I do use yoast.com for a lot of my WordPress information and in one of his SEO articles he recommended only using the post name. But I am not clear as to why it would be better - I should probably ask him. There is a plugin you can use if you do decide to change your permalink structure - I installed it when I changed mine and didn't have a single problem. This is the plugin http://urbangiraffe.com/plugins/redirection/ and if you are interested in the yoast article it is http://yoast.com/articles/wordpress-seo/

Re: 35 Tips for getting started with social media

Kim, I honestly did not give much of look at posterous. I think perhaps I will do a follow up post, and include some newer services. I was trying to keep the list focused on more Twitter like applications. Tumblr was the odd man out :)

Re: 35 Tips for getting started with social media

Kim,

Thank you. I'm glad to see more people using Diigo. It's really such an under valued tool. It has so many social aspects and features, that people tend to get intimidated and never use it to it's full potential. I think you should absolutely share you own content, when it's your best quality stuff. I do mention often, not to share and promote your own content. This is because others will do it for you. Often when people are starting out they lack a big enough network for exposure. Under those circumstances share your best stuff, until you build up a network and platform for exposure. On a side note, I need to get you more active on FriendFeed :-)

Re: Six Alternatives To Twitter

Hi Mike,

Did you consider including posterous? It's a bit like tumblr but everything is posted via email - you don't even have to sign up for an account.

Re: 35 Tips for getting started with social media

Mike - Wow! You've covered it all. It actually seems exhausting to me :-)

I agree with Mark that there are differing views on permalinks. I actually prefer to remove the date from mine and use only the post title.

And I was really happy to see your mention of diigo. While I still prefer delicious, diigo does allow you to bookmark to all three sites like you mentioned. When I first started doing that it was more for bookmark insurance - if one site disappeared my bookmarks would still exist somewhere else. Only later did I think of the social aspect of it.

I am, however, often hesitant to share my own stuff. You suggested sharing your own content in Google reader. Is that really an acceptable practice?

On a side note, I am slowly trying to spend more time with friendfeed :-)
