Hi Conrad - thanks for your comment. I think that there is some potential in not only Twitter usernames but any social network username having some value that follows along the lines of web domains. Perhaps not costing the same amount, but there could be some high value placed on certain usernames.

Just take a look at what happened with CNN and the @cnnbrk Twitter handle...current Twitter policy does not allow usernames to be sold, but in the future, what if it did? How much would CNN have paid for @cnnbrk? What if someone set up @yahoo or @google and didn't work for the company?

It's the same thing with domain names. This possibility does exist...but may not happen for a long time...at least for profit. Drew's case as illustrated in the post is a bit unique since it went for charity.

Would love to hear more about your thoughts on this issue! :)

Hi Kurt - thanks for your comments. I would say that I'm friends with Brian Solis and do actually write for his Bub.blicio.us blog covering most social events that I make it out to. But unfortunately I will not be making it to the Real-Time Summit this week as I'm already committed to going to BlogWorld. Hopefully we'll be able to catch up at a later time.

Switching to WordPress is all a matter of personal preference. I know people who are perfectly fine with using Blogger while others use WordPress. Granted that there are more free templates and customizations that can happen with WordPress. It's entirely your choice.

Thanks ken. I'm going to keep rolling out core insights from a social interaction design perspective. The trick to making a lot of this stuff work is wrapping the content experience in a second frame of activity. By structuring and organizing activity that's a distinct and separate experience from that of the content itself, you can get users to engage without their having to engage on the content directly. I'll do Yahoo Fantasy next, as that's another great example of how a game has been built about a game.

It's all frames of interaction. The social web supplies new possibilities for interesting frames, from socializing w/ friends to social gaming, from building an encyclopedia to publicizing your work life..

Very interesting points...I never really thought about how Yelp and FourSquare really don't give that much tangible value but rather it's all about intangible value that keeps driving people to join. Take FourSquare...users aren't getting any reward and yet they keep wanting to check-in and be the mayor of certain locations. Only now are businesses getting involved in showing that there is some monetization value.

Perhaps the biggest thing I took away was when you said that the "richer our understanding of what users are like and what they do, the better our interaction models will be." That's really powerful in that apps and tools need to think about the users and how their behaviors are before trying to build out the app any further.

That's one of the main problems that can cause some headaches when Twitter decides to go forward with business-focused accounts. The elimination of twitter spammers is the responsibility of the manufacturer - that being Twitter, but the point here is that the focus for business and people who want to follow others back, there are some clear signs as to who you shouldn't follow.

Depending if the official Blackberry app has some real functionality that you would expect with things like Seesmic Desktop or Tweetdeck but for the Blackberry, I would switch, but for the most part, I'm happy with Twitterberry. Haven't used UberTwitter and don't think I would with all the ads on it. Twitterberry is simplistic and easy to use.

@Matt - Thanks for your comment. I think you're right that there's still some way for companies to go before companies realize it's true legitimacy. Being a social media practitioner is a credible profession and the fact that companies have to seek out people like yourself gives it more value and legitimacy because they know that your expertise is in using the tools to help have conversations and engage with customers.

My twitter account has been affected - but the avatar is back to normal but the background is ultimately lost. Need to reload the background unless Twitter has ability to restore it.

@Marc- thanks for your comment. I think you're right that Brizzly is trying to overcome not only some of the past mistakes of its predecessors, but also as it relates to usability. I'm sure that this is only the first phase of its development, but I'm somewhat impressed by what is being offered here. It's *almost* tempting enough to drive me away from using Seesmic Desktop now...

I guess I never gave it a fair shot. I stopped using it when I discovered a lot of the locations I was checking in at required me to type in a address :-/ At that point I simply jumped back to Brightkite.

Damn that iPhone right! I dig my blackberry, but sometimes, just sometimes, I get jealous at all the aps the iPhone has.

As for the title to this post, you coulda edited it to read: 5 (+1) Web Apps We Can't Live Without :-P

@Ricardo - I have a Blackberry and actively use FourSquare through the mobile browser. I get what you're saying...I wish sometimes I had a app for the Blackberry that is similar to that of what the iPhone has.

Posterous is a good idea and I was thinking about including that in this post...but then that would be more than 5 apps, huh? :) Great suggestion!

@Jane - thanks for your comment. I think you're right that while Gmail has encountered some issues, Yahoo hasn't really gone down in a significant manner in recent memory. Instant messaging is something also to be included as something to include on this list as well...thanks for your thoughts!

Bing is an interesting selection. If Bing went down, would you find yourself a bit "lost"? By that I mean would you be pissed that it's down?
