agreed, "promote and encourage the original" is always difficult but doing so provides a segue for adoption. it's almost like a sales strategy - you have to find a way to relate to the customer.

as for "don't just copy", bad copycats can definitely make it in foreign countries. china's xiaonei totally ripped off facebook, even in their college market entry point. however at that point, it's almost like a niche product with the outward appearance of a bad copycat.
