Over the last few months I've been writing more blog posts that combine the idea of sharing a link, like I would on Twitter, but also pulling a quote and adding my own thoughts. Some of them are just those two paragraphs, some of them warrant more time and words, but it's getting ideas out without waiting until I have an hour to write something longish on a topic. Besides, there are actually occasions when my ideas are just one or two paragraphs. Why make it longer? ;-)

Re: How not to be a hot mess in the hot seat

Practice is big. While I agree the helpless feeling of a technical difficulty is stressful, at least as a technician I can do something about that. When an attorney asks for an exhibit number that doesn't exist, that's a whole different level of stress. ;-)

Re: Weekly Photography Challenge – Places of Worship

Mormon Tabernacle in SLC https://flic.kr/p/oXbDD1

Re: How did the best possession team in the NHL miss the playoffs, and how did one of the worst get in??

Actually puck possession isn't directly measured, it's not like anyone stands around with a stopwatch and clicks it every time the puck changes hands. As I understand it, Corsi and Fenwick use shot attempts as a proxy. Teams who have the puck more often attempt more shots than those that don't, right? But, there are more advanced stats that measure whether a player "starts" on a faceoff in the defensive zone, offensive zone or center ice.

Re: How did the best possession team in the NHL miss the playoffs, and how did one of the worst get in??

The thing that the advanced stat haters seem to miss is that advanced stats, like puck possession, aim to predict what will happen over the long haul. Most teams, in most seasons, who possess the puck more than their opponents, will do well. Most teams who do not, will not. Most players, who posses the puck significantly more that the players they play against, will eventually score more because they will get more opportunities (assuming a comparable level of shooting ability), but again it is over the long haul. Look at the number of players with horrible puck possession numbers who just happened to score 25-30 goals one year and never did it again. That's what you're trying to measure, is a season like that sustainable or was it just random?

Just because the Kings didn't make the playoffs this particular season doesn't mean that assumption is wrong, it means the Kings were victims of sports randomness as I argue on my own post- http://sports.mikemcbrideon...

Re: Weekly Photography Challenge – What Floats Your Boat?

Marseille, France

http://www.flickr.com/photo...

Re: 5 Signs Your Recruiter Sucks

Seems like Number 5 could be it's own blog post, and broken out into at least 5 sucky ways recruiters deal with candidates. Stuff happens, and things change. You'll get over all of these thoughts about what other people think, when you realize that they aren't the ones who have to live your life, you are. They don't have to like the decisions you make, only you do, and as long as you're making the choice that is best for you, the people who matter will understand and support that. People who don't support your decision to do what makes you happy, probably don't deserve to have you spend a minute thinking about them.

Re: 2 Minute Drill • For some reason (they’re claiming player safety),...

Keeping players safe from the scourge of individualism!

Re: Back to the Google Reader Replacement Drawing Board

Good for them, thanks for the update!

Re: Tavares: Loss to Pittsburgh Still Stings | Islanders Point Blank

Glad to see that just being a surprise team and making the playoffs wasn't enough for him!

Re: This Week’s Links (weekly)

You're very welcome! Unfortunately, you provided a great example of exactly the sort of thing that makes kids vulnerable. They are already pretending to try and be normal, and desperate for positive reinforcement. People who grow up with a proper sense of their own value, don't feel the need to hide, and don't feel the need to do anything to get positive words. Positive words are great, don't get me wrong, and we should be willing to give them out as much as possible, but the desperate seeking out of affirmation as to our own value is where kids can be very easy to manipulate. If we have a healthy sense of ourselves, then we aren't willing to do literally anything for positive feedback, we can can maintain a healthy relationship and recognize when someone is trying to force us into unhealthy choices.

Re: What do you plan to use for RSS reader with Google Reader shut down?

I started down the path with a few, but I think the one I am switching to is actually named The Old Reader, http://theoldreader.com/. (Personally I think it should be your choice as to whether to testify or be involved). The one thing that I want to address though, is the comment you made about creating a persona that is in complete control of their lives, and when that control is ripped away it is too much for them. I do think we try to control every little thing in our lives as we grow up with being abused, and it is a way to try and protect ourselves. However, I don't think it is actually possible to control your life in that way. Something is always going to rip that control away, whether it be other people, the weather, or a whole host of things that we cannot actually control. Healing, to me, is not hiding away from anything I can't control and living a limited life where I only interact with things I can control, it's knowing that I can't control everything, and that I will be safe even when I can't control everything because I have an inner strength and sense of myself that doesn't get overwhelmed by outside events.

Mike McBride
http://about.me/mike.mcbride

Re: Charity Launches Anti-Facebook Campaign

I've always thought the same thing about the encouragement to like or share something on Facebook "if you care", when if you really cared you might do something that takes more than half a second.

Re: How Far RSS Has Fallen

No question that it does open up the possibility of some experimentation now that Google won't be dominating the RSS reader space.
