The guy who makes the intro - if he s a good match maker should know enough both parties to assume they will both want to meet (eg: a startup looking to hire someone / and a killer candidate for the job).

If you re not sure enough, you should ask for permission. This is a matter of judgement.

The reason people don t ask for permission, is that it is painful to ask for it. requires multiple emails and explanations before the intro email happens. So many drop it.

I have learned that i could skeep a meeting i don t want to take by simply engaging by email and asking a brief pitch of the reason to the other party. many times this is enough to suggest a meeting is not that necessary

Re: New tools use social data to find iPhone apps

Cody, you are missing some of the most interesting tools out there.

we created http://appsfire.com (in june this year) the very first service that allow users to find apps via their friends or peers. The service is being used by top users and tech writers (http://appsfire.com/vips), we d be happy to add you there.

Re: Is George Lucas banking on Verizon’s Droid?

well spotted

Re: Developers: the best smart phone platform is?

i guess the question should be: which smart phone has the best platform for a specific type of usage. Because for productivity and business i think Blackberry is and will remain a winner. For entertainment and fun iPhone also. Android could be kind of hybrid.

But to date by far iPhone remains the best for developers because they are the only one that provide a seamless billing system with a painless way to suck in revenues for developers. Blackberry has one advantage: they can price apps higher for the same usage (easy to compare). But the billing is more painful.

Re: Thinking about App Stores

Bijan

app stores are meant to be discovered via your social graph. this is why we built Appsfire.com, an unfunded project, already gathering high profile users like Robert Scoble, Marshall Kirkpatrick, Brad Feld, Chris Dixon and many more (check their apps here http://appsfire.com/vips )

So much more is coming, that a comment is not enough to dlsclose it. I think this was and still is one of the issue in that industry. Things are starting to get better but as you said there are too many platforms for developers and enough good standards in the mobile ads space, specially for promoting and merchandising apps. The App store(s) so far have done a poor job in that direction except for top sellers. Hopefully this will change over time

Re: jonathan. tumbling.

Hi John

would love to interview you for Appsfire.com blog
We do this from time to time with top apps creators (specially the one we love).

Shoot me an email when you have time ouriel@appsfire.com

ps: btw good news: in our research boxcar is a top 10 twitter app in terms of installed apps

Ouriel Ohayon

Re: 5 More Must Have Photography iPhone Applications

Hi, we created a nice iPhone widget with the apps mentioned above which you can embed if you want

http://bit.ly/TopPhotosApps

Note that each time you buy an app via this widget we donate 100% of our affiliate commission to charity: water

Ouriel Ohayon
AppsFire.com

Re: Open Subtitles

Fred you probably want to check http://dotsub.com/

Re: Digital iPhone cheapskates

Robert, you probably want to make a difference between apps that are Twitter clients and Apps that use Twitter as a way to broadcast a message as part of an experience, just like email (for example sharing a song you love on Last.fm does not make Last.fm a twitter app)

So there are no 4000+ twitter apps but 4000+apps that mention twitter in their description

Re: LUNCHTIME POLL: What’s Your Favorite iPhone App?

We put below a link to the Mashable's selection in a nice clickable widget that can be embedded on your blog (and generate donation to charity: water)

http://appsfire.com/selection.php?cid=125515871...

Re: My Mac OSX essential apps I could not live without

that s why i did not move to snow leopard. actually anything related to mac,
i prefer to wait for version 1.2 because most of the times it is shipped
with weird bugs like those

Re: My Mac OSX essential apps I could not live without

yes, Safari was getting slow for some kind of reason. i have not been using
it for the past month and a hald and only using chromium. You need to be in Sync with twitter to keep track of news. Asynchronous reading is not convenient on twitter...and probably too cluttered.

I would say that RSS readers as we know them are going to die but there is a definite need for a simple reader enabling asynchronous reading

Re: iPhone app shootout Thursday

well Robert, i would kill to be at this event.
