Then when things really kicked off with a few hundred metres to go, his only path to the front was to shoot the gap between two riders in front of him. He had a split second to make the move, as the gap between the riders was closing. He did not risk it, had to soft pedal as no way to advance and got swamped.

Why?
1. He took to long to think about it,
2. It was too dangerous in his opinion
3. He did no have the kick in his legs.
Either way, I think that was the end of his pro tour career. Sprinters need to take quick risky decisions to win races.

And if that was a club race, I probably would do the same.

Re: Confusion reigns, inside and out, over Mitchelton-Scott’s new sponsor

Why does this remind me of the "sale" of the Perth Glory to the London Football Exchange.

Re: How the first British e-racing champion had his title stripped

Does nobody at British Cycling and Zwift read the UCI regulations. The British Cycling e-racing rules and regulations state "cycles are required to comply with UCI regulations covering bicycles" and UCI article 1.3.006 "Equipment shall be of a type that is sold for use by anyone practising cycling as a sport." So restricting "equipment" to riders in Zwift who have reached a certain level or performed certain tasks (ie 50,000m of climbing) is in breach of the UCI article and therefore the British Cycling e-racing rules and regulations.

Re: The Secret Pro: Drafting cars happens, Nils Eekhoff should be World Champ

I was at my State Junior Championship, one rider punctured, changed his wheel took a couple minutes and chased back on shaving over a minute off the lap record in the process. Claimed he did nothing wrong, even when presented with photos of him holding on the back of one of his team mates parents cars. "It is what the pros do, motorpaced back to the bunch". So stop normalising cheating.

Nils crashed at 128.3km to go, he got to the back of the convoy at under 120km to go. So a lot more happened than the two minutes of video being shown here, including a very dubious sticky bottle at 123.5km to go. I think the UCI jury were being generous DQing him for 2 minutes of drafting when it was more than 10. From my understanding the UCI jury were acting on a complaint from another nation. The UCI jury would act on a complaint from another team, but I presume that would not be that often.

Re: Tiff Cromwell’s Giro Rosa Diary: prologue

thanks for the report, not even brave enough to put my race bike in the gutter, let alone a TT bike at full speed

Re: Welcome to the VeloClub hub!

just tried it again after seeing 7 people joined the pool. I am in charge of blocking port80 traffic and if is was not for 50 public access computers, nothing would be blocked (we do block most porn sites).

Our management encourages the use of social networks, I was even asked to build a facebook app. A number of our staff (including senior management) use facebook, a few use twitter and other social networking sites.

Re: Is Kwippy yet another microblogging service?

I like the threaded commented on Kwippy, however, the IM interface does do not do enough for me.

Re: Optus fails to deliver on Australian iPhone plans

Duncan, it appears that Optus and Vodafone are not sharing the their network everywhere. According to their websites in WA Vodafone's 3G network only goes as far south as Cockburn, while Optus claims as far south as Rockingham.

And that huge 700Mb is for traffic in both directions.

Re: The Problem With Leaving Twitter

Like most I experimented with Jaiku, Pownce, Plurk, BrightKite etc and each time I returned to Twitter, because of the community.
I have strayed to FriendFeed and stayed there, I am involved in a quite different community there. I use Twhirl with both Twitter & FF windows open, if Twitter is no responding, I wil concentrate of FF.
I do not agree with the Windows analogy, I use Windows at work, Mac OsX on my laptop and Ubuntu on my home desktop. I can live without any one Os and have easily (even my Mac) for any length of time.
The bar analogy is better.
If twitter loses the community I will be out of there.

Re: louisgray.com: Is Your Web Getting Filtered? What's Blocked or Unlocked?

I work for a large public library and look after proxy which allows/blocks access to sites for the 100 public and 200 staff computers. Another team are the firewall nazis who block access to any outgoing port except 80 and 443, so no ftp, imap or pop email, ssh etc.
The censorship discussion is interesting and passionate in libraries. When the proxy responsibility got move from a Govt IT department to the Library. There was a good debate before it was decided to block porn because the public machines are in a public area and there have been some "incidents" in the past and "hacking" sites to protect the public machines (if you want to hack those public machine you need to read up at home). All the other typical restrictions SNS, webmail etc was removed.
We have just implemented free wifi in the public areas, without these restriction through a third party. (only limitation is speed 128k).
Most other Govt departments here block a big number of sites, including social networking, webmail and the like. I have known of one in the past that blocked all flash content and another that now blocks wikipedia.
One Department I use to worked for blocked a large number of sites and services. However, staff could get an exemption via their manager if they needed access to one of these sites for their work. Last I heard over 400 of the 700 staff had blanket exemptions and could access all sites with a number of different protocols.
I prefer my current environment were management trusts their staff to do the right thing.

Re: How Did Zillow Get To The Top Besides $87m In VC? You are already mentioned them by name, so they ask you to link to their site. Far better investing the time to contact you and ask nicely, even if it does not work than buying link ads.

It is probably Whitney's job or a good chunk of his time to search out these mentions of Zillow's name and request links. And yes it is good strategy.
