I'm envisioning a world were instead of fighting rootbound plants in 5 gal. pots, I just drop the whole shebang in the ground. Thanks for the tips on the growers. Despite having a million growers nearby, it never dawned on me to approach them. Considering that I can put over 200 miles a day on my car spanning 4 counties and 12 cities, I'm eating in my car. Just get out of the way when you see the green Mini (now crunched) with a black chick eating a taco from Taco Bell. Our favorite was Greenblatt's. On the pricey side, but at least it's good unlike the places you mentioned, save Mantilini which is just okay. Tom Bergin's has food after 10pm, and some of the places at The Grove will sell you a sandwich or appetizer after 10.

Also, IIRC, El Floridita is open after 10. I know that I've have plenty of meals there edging upon 11pm. The Romanian restaurant next door is also open late. Csardas is also open pretty late, though that's iffy, seemingly depending on how many Hungarians are kicking it on the patio.

I haven't lived on the westside for 10 years, so I won't run down the places in Santa Monica and Marina Del Rey we used to frequents as I don't even know if some of them still exist. I do know that you can get late night food over at Sawtelle. After a late day of working, with 2 starving babies, if we weren't in the mood for Greenblatt's, we'd head over to Sawtelle (10 - 15 min. drive from Melrose/Fairfax at that hour) and get some yakitori or udon.

Over here on the east side, it's a lot harder, but taco trucks and stands abound and you can't get better and cheaper food. Too bad there's no decent tacos west of downtown. Some of the sushi bars on this side of town stay open a little later than the ones in Hollywood. I've also found some tasty Cuban bistros over here.

Re: ICME: Mattress Dumper — D’oh!

Oh noes! Nov. 2002 was probably the worst month in my life...no I've had worse, but this was nonstop drama. We got into an accident in October. Got our car back in November. The day after we got the car back, it was stolen from right in front of our Melrose area apt. LAPD never showed up. I walked around the neighborhood until I could find a cop (Goodfellas and Starbucks is where they usually hang). I needed a rental car for work, so I got one and parked it where our Jetta used to be. It was street sweeping day and it ended at noon. I parked my car there at 12:03. I know this because not only did the car's clock said that, but so did my phone. I went inside to get my work stuff, and came back out 3 minutes later. Ticket.

A few weeks later, I was assaulted outside my apt. bldg. on Thanksgiving. LAPD response time? 3 hours and 42 minutes. The next day, I was going to cross the street and one of the cops on bike "pulled me over" for jaywalking. At 6am the Friday after Thanksgiving.

On the other hand, the times I call 911 on the freeway, the cops are pretty fast to show. I see here in my new area that 911 is super-duper fast. I've heard screeching tires only to she a helicopter fly over not 2 minutes later, then I hear the sirens. I gotta say, it seems if I require police help, I'd much better be in El Sereno, than Hollwyood.

Re: 64 Worst: People Who Can’t Drive in the Rain vs. Pink’s Hot Dogs

Rain drivers. Once I moved down the street from it, I couldn't handle the lines. It's so not worth the lines. But this shouldn't have been about Pink's, it should have been more about the clueless dolts in the line. Or the people that go there on freakin' tour buses.

But people in LA really suck at driving in the rain. It has nothing to do with if you're from here or not. I'm from Kansas City and we got a nice river separating the city from the 'burbs...and Kansas. Yeah, it was a shock when we moved here and I was like, "That's not a river, it's storm drain." But now, I have a fuller appreciation for it. There's a lot of neat little pockets of coolness on/near it and it is fun to walk. In fact, I'll be heading over to the Burbank section tomorrow. I have no idea how drought tolerant these new trees are because I've never bothered to look them up. There are over 30 kinds of trees that are given away. One would think that it would pretty easy to match at least by left type the or work in a pattern a tree that would complement the existing trees. But only 3 trees showed up here all on the west side of the street where they'll get considerable shade from the houses from October to March and my street is all fat palm trees.

When the other two trees die, I wonder if they'll still be counted against the Million trees. It's hard for me to feel too bad about the bricks and mortar shops because, 1) they're everywhere, 2) they're expensive comparatively speaking, and 3) the slow service at times.

Let's take my street, Huntington Dr. There are a lot of restuarants over here and 3 of them are very good. However, if I'm hungry NOW and broke (as always), I'm not going to Hecho in Mexico where it takes 10 minutes to order a drink and another 20 to get the drink, nevermind actually eating your food--you're looking at 30 - 40 minutes after you walk in the door. I'll go to one of the taco trucks where I can get tacos and a burrito to feed my entire family under $20 and in 10 minutes. As tasty as Hecho in Mexico is, we've never left there with a bill under $75 and usually 2 hours pass us by as we wait and wait and wait to get our bill. Such a shame because it is a very nice, albeit empty, restaurant and the food is good.

I get the troubles of the bricks and mortar shops and yes, the taco trucks should probably park where there's less competition for restaurants, like closer to my house...but we must look at this logically too. The taco truck vendors have been taxed, fined and legislated at the whim of the merchants, when do they get a say in how they run their businesses?

Re: It Caught My Eye: About A Man Named Jed

I love that rock.
