Okay I just did some quick research... apparently someone has a patent on
this type of software, so there's no easy or legal way to do this without
paying a fee to a company... see here for a discussion:

Rex,

The Laconica software is federated so that you can follow/reply across different instances. Peer to peer integration as you put it. As such any µblog hosted on status.net would have this intergration.

Since openmicroblogger.com and Twitteronia(I think) implement the OMB protocol they too will have this integration.

Very interesting... are any of these services doing some kind of peer to peer integration? I'm interested in self-hosted microblogging, but I want to be able to message users on their own self-hosted microblogs, as well as twitter and others. Is it possible?
