That said, they may take the number of hours to be something like 365*10=3,650 then bill out at more than 100%, after all there is the rounding up of 7 min intervals ;-)

Re: Telus and Bell to go GSM in 2010

Well the competition will be welcome, that much is certain. However, did I hear that Telus was doing everything it could to hold up a new entrant Globallive(?) getting to a launch?

Telus/Rogers, it's all pretty much the same. A year from my previous comments on this thread and accepting Telus may only be a couple of months away, I will be curious to see if either company tries to focus on customer service as a differentiator.

My point about buying out contracts was simply an observation that it comes down to money, there are many ways of framing the deal.

Re: Food and Wine Storytellers: James Sherrett and Anthony Nicalo

It's a date! :-)

Re: Why you should be thinking about twitter part 1 of 2

Stay tuned for Part 2, but I have to agree that what I call the 'false
etiquette' of following back is curious. I'd rather people take the time to
consider whether or not they want to follow back rather than do so
automatically. By doing so automatically I know I'm really just a statistic
in their mind!

Stewart

Re: A touching story, Toastmasters Speech #14 - "Embracing Nature"

Thanks Singne, I will pop the book in my bag for you to borrow when
leftantler and I jump on the Bowen Island Ferry and come to see you. I will indeed be sharing what I believe is a better way to do
this - it's not some magical mystery, but something which we all know a lot
about - storytelling!

Off the top of my head I would say that scientific and engineering
presentations may suffer from what a lot of business presentations do - that
is an obsession with the detail and an assumption that the bigger picture is
fully appreciated. More thought later in a future post!

Stewart

Re: Comments, urls, twittering storytelling and the financial crisis

Thanks for visiting Davin!

It's very much a developing process in terms of what I cover on this blog I
hope to keep you coming back :-)

Re: Comments, urls, twittering storytelling and the financial crisis

It's a good question! Tweetdeck lets you group users etc, but I suspect the
real answer is: people do not manage it!

Or put another way - why would I want to read a tweet that's old? A little
like watching a hockey game when you know the result. It's the reason I long
ago ditched my video recorder and Tivo means nothing to me (not having cable
aside!). If it's important I will make time to watch it live. If a tweet is
that important it will be more than a tweet - an email, a blog post, a phone
call, a meeting etc.

Of course that's not to say I think twitter is trivial it's just to say that
it has to be looked at what it is. You can search twitter, you can use #tags
etc, I even know of friends who use an alternative to twitter for either
their close friends or specific groups of friends (I'm thinking of Jaiku).
Twitter is an outpost for me, part of the plan but not the raison d'etre.

Re: Comments, urls, twittering storytelling and the financial crisis

I was talking to Boris Mann (www.bmannconsulting.com) about this a week or
two ago and agree with him that Twitter is not about how many followers you
have, it's about who you follow. I do not automatically reciprocate
followers and concentrate on making sure what's in my stream is of interest
to me. Tweetdeck really helps with that as well.

I think comments, twitter, social networking more generally such as linkedin
and facebook is all part of the same story. It's now very easy to 'connect'
with thousands of people I don't know - the question is where is the value?
My previous post http://tr.im/2xvl on linkedin maybe of interest given your
intention to be more leanient.

Re: 5 good things, an idea inspired by another good one

test comment

Re: Video: Toastmasters Speech #11 - Raven and the Whale

Thanks Ross/Carlos,
I'm looking forward to the next speech!

Stay tuned!

Re: Fido’s funny new design

Looks like an airport of car park company - such as http://www.ncp.co.uk/

Quite fitting really, it really looks as cheap and pathetic as the service they offer.

Re: Indishpensable, Fine Dining at Home - Inblinkingcredible!

I don't think it's restaurants offering a service, more a service being
offered in it's own right. I believe there may be similar offerings out
there - I think there is one in Burnaby, BC called Dinners Ready. However, I
admire what Indish are doing, they've just updated their menu. I think I've
had 7 meals from there now and everyone has been excellent. When picking
them up, the staff seem to take a very close interest in whether I've
enjoyed meals, whether the cooking instructions are good etc - on one
occasion the chef came out to advise me that the duck dish I was planning to
cook needed more seasoning than you would normally give something. Details,
matter - this was very helpful and builds my confidence.
Stewart

Re: Telus and Bell to go GSM in 2010

So the sole limiting factor of 'cutting edge technology' is it's geographical reach?

Canada has not even implemented 10-20 year old technology properly in limited areas - i.e. GSM into major urban centres, such as Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal that should even geographically be easier to manage.

Capacity is a major issue so I would argue that allowing Millions of people in the same small space is more of a challenge than Canada faces geographically. In many parts of the world cellular networks are rolled out quickly because it is so efficient. Some of these countries in Africa and South America may not be as 'large' as Canada but they do demonstrate it can be done.

My comment about the UK was more about the fact that competition has driven down prices, regardless of the technological challenges. In Canada there is no competition and as a country we miss that opportunity.

In many ways Canada shares the same mindset as the UK. It likes to portray itself as part of the elite nations (think G7 here) and yet the realities are more similar to developing nations such as India or China. Cellphones are but one small illustration of this, be it in the scheme of things an irrelevant one.

Re: Disqus Gives Users What They've Been Asking For

LOL - does the new profile pic help?

Re: Disqus Gives Users What They've Been Asking For

Splendid :-)

Re: Disqus Gives Users What They've Been Asking For

Roman,

That's harsh I think. I suspect the portfolio companies have peaks and lows of activity. Besides, I don't read all Fred's posts. Disqus I am interested in, the others not so much. I hardly ever read the music related stuff, but you know what I keep coming back to see what he has written about.

Give him a break. I too like the 'branch' label, the level of innovation is quite
incredible. As I prepare for the second Mentor panel in the New Ventures BC
competition I can see that there is no shortage of great ideas and the nice
thing is that many of the companies I see all know each other and help
provide an extended support network.

So many of the elements are there ready to be pulled together which is the
role I see Bootup fulfilling. It's exciting times and it makes me very
optimistic about the future. The world knows Vancouver and BC are among the
most beautiful places in the world to live. I want to see the world also
saying that Vancouver is also among the best places in the world to start a
business and make it big!

Re: Was music better or have we just "Filled Up" on our quota - David RD Gratton

I have a friend who is mid/late 40s who has his 6 disc autochanger full of 80s drivel, i.e. Ah-ha, Kylie M etc etc.

I do love 'my' old stuff, which in my case is more Blondie, Madness etc but I feel my music tastes get more confused as I get older. The Radio 3 Popcast is responsible for liking Controller.controller, Malajube and Toyko Police Club and every so often I like some weird techno trance stuff when actually the closest I got to a club playing it was taking an ibruprofen once, after a beer!

I'm also finding I'm discovering old stuff that I wish I knew about before, so Tom Petty is one of those and Cake for instance. The nice thing about technology is you can easily discover and listen to whatever you want, regardless of whether you were there at the time or not.

So, as I mentioned, I think I'm happily confused by my own musical taste :-)

Re: Sharing Contacts Via LinkedIn - where's the tit for tat setting?

Hey!
