  • Mark 'Rizzn' Hopkins  I left this comment earlier today based on our conversations and the blog post above - it's 4AM now and I've had a chance to finally watch the video. You make a lot of good points, and I do think that a network is probably the strongest positioning point for ad deals like you're talking about. I have a lot of thoughts on this, and tomorrow, either at my domain or mashable there should be something showing up on this topic. There's a lot to noodle here, and I'm enjoying watching this conversation unfold so publicly.

  • Mark 'Rizzn' Hopkins  The echo chamber isn't a big deal to me because most people aren't like me, and most folks don't subscribe to every blog out there. Most folks find the voice they like the most and listen to them and a few others. Think back to before blogosphere and RSS. Did you subscribe to the NY Times, the LA Times, the Chicago Sun and the Dallas Morning News? Probably not. If you subscribed to any of them, you probably subscribed to one that was most geographically relevant to you. Same idea, shift it for modernity. We're talking about the tech sector and we're talking about electronic news. Sure, there are lots of folks with 100 feeds. There are a few folks with 500+ feeds. And then there's Scoble (before he nuked his GReader account). My point being is that most folks will sample the blogosphere and find a few they like - they don't subscribe to everyone. Thus the echo doesn't exist for them. Choice does, though, and that's what makes this nice.

  • Mark 'Rizzn' Hopkins  I think the Oprah thing is a fairly accurate statement. The thing is, the news still has to come from somewhere. Bloggers thrive on the news, and I remember a time where the argument was that bloggers couldn't exist without the Old Media since there was no original reporting. Now that some bloggers are doing original reporting, the complaint is that it is news based, and not enough editorial or unique opinion. Can't please everyone, I guess.

  •   qthrul  I tried this thought experiment a few days ago: 1) Can you remember -vividly- a news show from July 23, 2007? 2006? 2005? 2004? 2) Would you truly want to read the 1 year old People magazine in the dentists office? Time? Newsweek? The New Yorker? Popular Science? Sports Illustrated? Wired? Family Handyman? 3) Are 80% of your blog entries interesting enough to drive 20% of your traffic? 4) Does your blog entry have a lifespan greater than that of store brand dairy products? 5) When you link to another blog entry or web article, how long do you truly expect that link to work? And... if the link is gone... is your argument or reasoning for the link gone with it? All I could come up with as a visual is a constant stream of words that periodically have a hand waved through them that stops the stream for a few seconds and the stream continues. Part of me wonders if we are covering the same tired models due to a lack of historical perspective or just treating this as so much new paint on a free expression wall -- or at worst, enabling an environment where the only writing is on the bathroom walls.

  • Mark 'Rizzn' Hopkins  Right - which is what makes it great. Diversity of opinion. The one downside to team blogs or federations that dictate who gets what topic is that if I have a sharply different opinion than a fellow team-member, there is less percentage in disagreement, at least between the team-members.

  •   Aaron Brazell  Overlap is always going to be there, but particularly if the federation wants to make an advertising play, having specialties is important. What's the point of having a bunch of people surrounding you that are exactly alike. That's pretty much what the tech blogosphere is like now, y'know.
