The trends require authentication. So its not easy to get them on any other page.
But, if you are/have a developer you can do it. Scrape the page: http://twitter-trends.appspot.com/ for topics and do not forget to send the right cookie.

Users need more control on what applications can do on their behalf. Options like read only access or to a selected set of features can be useful.

Since I posted, someone mentioned that one of the Twitter apps defaults retweets that way. I think it was Twhirl, but can't remember which one. That would explain its persistence.
