I work in team which has next to 100% kernel engineers/hackers and all of them do that on *razor blade thin* hardware,  i.e. product should be desktop but fit in pocket, and yes, their kernel should work for that little piece... I must say that we have that kind of atmosphere "wanna run with big dogz? learn to pee on big trees" and many boys had left team... girls never applied for job - I asked line manager, he said NONE ever.
