They should have said "must use" since that more accurately describes how to perform a custom install using an upgrade license.

Re: AuctionWally calls out eBay CEO

Hi, Craig. You'll find my review of the Auction Listing Specialist here. It seems to be quick and responsive. You can switch to the pre-release versions here:

http://dev.chromium.org/getting-involved/dev-ch...

Re: The end of the FAQ

You make some good points, though I think that the FAQ has become such a standard part of the website design process that I don't know how many designers are actually doing the right thing and trying to avoid needing a FAQ. I've been really impressed with Dimdim myself, more so after the weekly public training webinar yesterday. It's really and truly simple and cross-platform. I was always frustrated when I couldn't use Linux with Webex, but I can with Dimdim.

Re: Four Reasons Google’s “Nuke” is a Dud

You make a good point about Google's products being consistently behind the market leaders. Google’s Chrome browser was over-hyped and feature-poor, and it’s still slow more often than it’s fast. Chrome doesn’t have the beauty of Safari, the legacy of IE, the applications of Firefox nor the completeness of Opera. In the same way, Chrome OS won’t have the beauty of OS X, the robustness of Linux nor the install base of Windows. Google is again trying to force its way into a market space by inserting a product that is trying to compete with established players by surpassing none of them on the merits.

Smart money is that Google’s Chrome OS will be as slow and feature-poor as its browser still is, but its tough to immagine how this play from Google isn’t going to shake up the netbook and low-budget PC market.

Re: Aaron’s tweets for the week

I didn't think it was going to happen, but it seems that we actually will be playing on Monday night. I'm truly impressed by your company and I look forward to trying it out whenever I need such a service in the future.

There are many service providers competing in the real-time bidding space in the auction industry. The difficult part is that latency is huge, as the difference between a bid being received before the auctioneer says sold can be sub-second. What kind of latency is associated with Dimdim's video abilities?

Re: Fourth Wave auction software

Have you selected another software solution?

Re: Naming and storing auction pictures and data

By item-level entry, I mean a way of listing items that has a picture associated with each item and lists the item description next to the picture. Paragraph-level is the archaic way of listing an auction by simply providing a big block of text that has items separated by a comma or dash or tilda or some other weird character. We've all seen the old sale bills:

dresser ~ toolbox ~ wagon ~ gun safe ~ tractor ~ combine ~ Ford truck

An example of an item-level listing is anything with Internet bidding. Internet bidding requires item-level. Proxibid or purplewave.com have good examples of item-level listings. AuctionZip has examples of paragraph-level listings.

We as auctioneers can do better, we must do better and we will do better.

Re: Naming and storing auction pictures and data

I can't believe I forgot that part. It's crucial to find a standard set of naming conventions for images that includes letters and numbers and the few characters you mentioned. Anything outside of that is asking for trouble and headaches. More importantly, if it isn't necessary - and things like ampersands ($) and pounds (#) and slashes - why try to use it?

Re: Important Announcement / Format Change

No longer will my radio be tuned to NPR. However, one of the most insightful quotes about this topic I've found came from a talk given by someone at Google who noted that their position was to design for the expert. If you do, the novice will quickly become an expert. That's why there aren't any instructions on the Google home page.

I don't think that we designers should hurt our sites by catering to the novice users. If someone is interested in the content of the website, and the links are clearly defined by a site's color scheme, he/she won't have a problem and will quickly learn to use the site - and the rest of the Internet.

Re: phpList provides free and easy bulk email list management

Thanks for the comments, Joe.
