I may not be the best to answer this because I generally prefer electronic communication over anything else. My parents actually upgraded their phones in part because they know I'm more apt to respond to texts than a phone call. (I know, I feel bad). I've never "liked" talking on the phone. I have family members and friends that I'm much closer to now that they're on Facebook/Twitter/etc. than we did before. So, the proliferation of text messaging, chat and email suites me perfectly. I know this to be the case for others as well.

All that being said, I do appreciate face to face communication. There are people that I've met online that are really cool to talk to and hang out with. For me, I don't really think of anyone as an "online friend". They're just friends. Some that I also know IRL and others that are online only. The nature of how we met or mode of general communication doesn't really factor in.

Just like in IRL, there will be online people that I know in passing and would be less apt to want to meet them IRL. There are others that I've built a friendship with that I would seek out if I were in their town or if they came to mine. It just depends.

You're absolutely right. I've got a few spare cycles in the evenings and on weekends so this could be a good fit for me. Till this point, I figured I had to be a 133t, ninja programmer in order to contribute to the Ubuntu community. It was eye-opening to find out that's not the case.

It's good that you're taking the time to consider this. Too many parents are off doing their own thing without thinking about how their actions effect their children. It's really too bad your ex can't (or won't) understand this.

I don't think there is a specific time limit that should be placed on introducing the significant other to your children. It would probably be best to wait until you know how serious the relationship is. The worse thing that can happen is for the kids to get more attached than you do. This will make a break up 10x harder.

I'm sure your kids are smart and I know you realize the importance of open communication. I'm sure the kids can handle it. It's too bad that they have to.

Very well said. As a parents, we have to remember that we won't always be around to help our kids make the "right" decisions. Our job is to teach them how to think for themselves and not blindly follow others.

There are some things that aren't appropriate but keeping the lines of communication open is most important so that they understand why. When they are confronted with making decision when I'm not around, I just hope that I've given them the tools they need to stay safe.

Very interesting post. I echo many of the things that you mention here. I think I know where my niche is, however, I struggle with the term "expert". I guess it depends on perspective. While I may know more about a certain subject than the average joe I can't help but look at the people that I consider experts and wonder how much value that I could add.
