Well AMEN to that, dude! As it happens, I was born in Glendale, CA. Not that that means anything.

It's worth pointing out that nothing like 'groupthink' really went down on this thread, only a little healthy skepticism expressed toward a thinly-supported request to sit through an hour and fifteen minutes of Christian message on an ExChristian site. Also that the original post says not a word about taking our time, and that no-one accused Norig of anything, and actually first implored him to chime in with the discussion, which he still has not done, except indirectly via this email.

Norig, My only suggestion going forward would be perhaps to wait until you are less pre-occupied with more important things before engaging an anonymous group for input on a personal problem. We look forward to hearing more from you... directly.

Mr. Webmaster, sir, please advise the masses that I have had a busy week with midterms. I am a university senior majoring in Accountancy. I have nothing to hide from anybody. I attend California State University, Northridge.

My full name is Norig B Karakashian. I am a male--not a female. No, my name is not an anagram for anything. My middle initial stands for Bedros. I happen to have an Armenian heritage, so I must bear such a name from my culture. I apologize if somebody's superficial mind decides to attack my name after the discussion group engages in the phenomenon of Groupthink.

How dare these people accuse me of being a covert follower of faith. I left no implication in my letter.

If these hasty judgments go on further, I will send a transcript of my communication with the alleged Christian. She is a female who resides in Jamaica (I am not kidding). She says she is a member of an organization called LEET (Logos Evangelists something something.)

As I said, I am busy with my studies. I am a 21-year-old intellectual who wanted casual feedback. I was very clear about "taking your time" when viewing and analyzing the video.

Survival of the fittest means those who are fittest to survive. Again, it's about the species surviving, not necessarily the individual. The human race has a greater chance of surviving through mutual cooperation than through a "every man for himself" behavior. Sociopaths (without conscience, empathy, or concern for others, and likely in prison) are a small percentage of the human species. However, I think you'd agree that sociopaths do not contribute to the survival of the species.

I did not argue that toward the end of the "Natural Selection process..." at all. I argue that empathy, compassion, familial love, etc., are one of the reasons we were able to rise to our present position on the food chain. Lots of other life forms on the planet are stronger and bigger than us. But together, a cooperating group of naked primitives armed with mere sticks can bring down the largest, toothiest, most clawed equipped aggressive predators on the planet. Obviously working together for the common good is a good fit for survival. And in point of fact, quite a few other mammals run in cooperative packs for survival.

As far as Katrina goes, I am personally familiar with dozens of non-religious people who volunteered time, effort and funds to help the victims of that tragedy. I don't personally know a single religious person who did that. I suppose it's the crowds that we mutually run in that taints our view on that. There are a plethora of generous, compassionate people in the world. Your supposition that Christians are more generous and compassionate than every one else is, frankly, offensive at the least and most certainly misled. I could easily make the claim that the only reason any Christians do anything for others is entirely based on the selfish desire to earn jewels in some future crown. In fact, the whole idea of giving slavering worship of a deity that has promised to eternally torment untold millions of my fellow human beings for simply failing to adhere to the correct version of the "right" religion, is anathema. I don't care what kind of rewards a Hitler might offer me; I would still refuse to love and serve such a monster.

You seem stuck on holding up sociopathic behavior as your "proof" that most humans are predatory. Let me ask you this: If you were to abandon your religion today, do you really think you'd start stealing, raping, murdering, and so on, tomorrow? Really? Is the only reason you are a law abiding citizen is because you are afraid of a supernatural hammer?

Think about it.

Or, how about this thought: If there were no promise of everlasting bliss and no threat of never-ending horror, would you still love Jesus? Would you still be a Christian?

Do I think we've "arrived" evolutionarily speaking? I have no idea. I doubt it. Nothing in the world is static. The ability to change one's mind when new information is acquired (Wow, I didn't know that! Cool!) is foundational to science. Stagnation of thought (We already have all the truth there is, and we must reject anything that contradicts our truth.) is foundational to religion.

Lastly (for now), check this out: http://www.atheistvolunteers.org/Austin. Since these people are atheists, with no fantasy of rewards from heaven, what do you suppose motivates their efforts?

Thanks for the response. You say some things that are totally new to me in the area of Natural Selection, which is understandable, I'm no expert. But if I may, I do have some questions from a 'theistic' perspective.

First, you say,
"Survival of the fittest doesn't mean survival of the most selfish.' Please unpack this. I've always thought that natural selection at it's core is an extremely selfish thing. It has always said, "Eat the weak...ally with the strong". Do you deny this?

To your credit, you seem to offer a plausible explantion. You argue that towards the end of the Natural Selection cycle (i.e. when man has become what we are now) does he evolve by leaving behind his earlier instincts and this departure of our most basic instints is the thing that propelled him to the top of the food chain. You argue that there was a 'shift' somewhere when fully evolved man says left behind his self-consuming ways and shifted concern for the society as a whole. He says, "I'm not going to eat the weak anymore, I'm going to help them." It's an odd theory...the very thing that kept early man alive (Natural selection) was the one thing he must walk away from in order to evolve.

In your opinion have we arrived at this advance state? If your answer is 'no, we're not there', then I assume that we are not fully evolved. And if we are not fully evolved, then can you even trust your own 'pre-evolved' mind when considering such things?

If your answer is 'Yes, we are there...we are fully evolved when we care for the weaker members of society." then why are we are only those who deny such a worldview (in particular the Theist/Christians) the ones actually doing such things to a much larger degree than an atheist? Don't get me wrong...atheist DO help the poor and are engaged in helping those in need. In fact, Bill Gates and Warren Buffet are atheist I admire greatly for their philanthropy. But I would argue that Theist/Christians are much more likely to give of their sweat, time and even money for the sake of those in need.

Let me explain. When Katrina hit, my church group went down there to help. I was absolutely amazed at the 100's (if not thousands) of churches each with 10-100 people there helping those 'weaker brothers' in need. I'm sure there were atheist in the mix....however, the overwhelming majority of of folks giving of their time and money were Christians.

Second, you argue that 'compassion' is a huge survival instinct? That statement intrigued me and confused me. Please explain how you come to this? How did 'compassion' help Caveman Jerry survive when he's facing hungry Caveman Steve who wants Jerry's food? Compassion is there in our hearts but the question of it's orgin cannot be answered by atheism logically. If it evolved, how did it do a 180 degree turn?

Third, you also say,

Would you agree that many unrepentant criminals in prison believe in their heart that what they did was justified? If it's murder, the other person deserved it...if it was theft, then they needed the money more than the person who earned it. Now, nearly all feel an instrinsic sense of justice by their terrible act. So my question is this: Were these crimnal acts right or wrong?

You'll likely say, "The criminal was wrong because it is against the law of the land." But what if a majority of folks voted and said, "No....murder is right."? Would it still be wrong regardless of majority rule? If so, why? If not, why not? You think this is silly, but it has happened in history! (1940's Hitler is but one example.) Simply put, if you have nothing metaphysical guiding your intrinsic behavior, then you open a Pandora's box which allows anything 'right' and anything 'wrong'. You can't leave morality to the individual to determine without guidance. Nine times out of ten he will get it wrong! Ask any police officer or social worker!

Who is this "imaginary friend" to which you refer. I'm afraid I don't follow. Are you talking about God? I have nothing against the premise of this site (although the Christian bashing is a bit offensive to me). I think it is a natural human urge to want to group oneself with others, to seek out like-minded individuals. I think religion fills this desire for many people, just as this website fills that void for you. I just want you to recognize the similarity instead of writing off anybody who still participates in Church activities as foolish. I think many people derive pleasure from going to Church and from participating in Bible studies, etc., and it doesn't necessarily have to step on your toes--likewise, atheism doesn't necessarily have to step on Christian's toes.

My point is simply that one cannot prove any one religion and yet one cannot disprove any one religion either (thus, when you tell me that "there isn't a shred of evidence to disprove that Allah is the true GOD! DUH!!!! you prove my point...hey, why aren't you Muslim, since you can't disprove Allah's existence?). I think, therefore, that your disdain of Christians (or Muslims...or Hindus) is misplaced. You can't prove that you are wise in your lack of belief and they are fools in their beliefs.

Finally, I don't know why there are people who are sooooo bothered by the fact that there are people who think that Christianity is a bullshit cult. I think it a bit arrogant that you suggest that your imaginary friend will be soooo upset from disbelief that SHE is determined to torture all unbelievers forever in a horrific pain and torment.

Ex-pastor guilty of murder
Wife slain by shotgun blast in back at their Vincent home

A jury deliberated less than two hours Friday before convicting a former Vincent pastor of murder for shooting his wife in the back with a shotgun.

Timothy Dane Tillman, 45, was found guilty of the Oct. 26, 2005, slaying of Janet Lorita Tillman, 40. She was killed in the home where she and her husband lived with their two daughters.

He also was convicted of possession of a forged instrument, in the forgery of a $5,000 check in his wife's name months after her death.

I shared some fear of "being wrong" at the beginning of my de-conversion as well. The way I got around the fear is that I was pretty confident that if there were a god, he/she/it would be a whole lot more understanding about things than the god described by the Bible. I figured, if God was really someone or something to look up to and admire and love, eternally torturing someone just because that person was afflicted with honest doubts would not be in God's bag of tricks, so to speak. If I were to believe in a god now, that god would have to possess considerably more impressive attributes and personalities (not to mention some testable evidence of existence) than the current offerings.
