Well, despite thinking Betty is pretty immature, I'm more on her side than Don's. Dick became Don before he ever met Betty, and Don's affairs were what instigated her investigations in the first place. And I don't think it's Betty's fault that Don cheats.

I don't foresee their marriage becoming stronger. I could see Don thinking his confession will bring their marriage closer together, but it seems Betty is going in the opposite direction, becoming more aware and testing the waters of an affair herself. She's really close to having Harry on that fainting couch.

I'm pretty certain Don is representative of the dying ways of fifties, and his character will inevitably become more marginalized and as you say, emasculated, as the sixties wear on - unless his character reaches some epiphany or transformation that allows him to change with the changing times. He does seem to be okay with drugs and likes California.

But I definitely agree Peggy will rise in a big way. Duck, yeah, that's got to be important, and very soon. Maybe she'll work for Duck and hire Sal. I'd love to see Peggy, a duck, and an Ann-Margaret wanna-be competing with Don for clients.

Yep - am well aware of that, which is why I didn't write "at MacWorld"
in the article.

I still think Apple will announce something big come January. It's a
safe prediction they'll host a "special event" right around the same
time as 2010 MacWorld and CES. Deliberately, to demonstrate they can
generate huge buzz independent of a conference.

Well you're one vote for 3 years being reasonable. I'd like to think I took
good care of this particular MacBook but on further thought I did take it
traveling a few times a year and even spilled water on it once.
Contrary to your experience I have had very good luck with iPods and
iPhones, the current 3G I have is still kicking at the 1 1/2 year mark and I
hope to upgrade next summer. Think there are some iPods lying around the
house we don't even use any more.

Nice to know the opening of the case is possible, but I'd likely just
go with letting the Apple Store take care of a battery replacement.

Hmmm, even if I had bought 3 year apple care it wouldn't have helped
in this case since it just passed the three year mark. Will try to
ignore conspiracy thoughts about hardware biting the dust with uncanny
timing. This mac was Intel; I haven't heard much about these Macs
being of lesser quality.

Good point about the battery. I did have to replace the battery on
this MacBook after about 2 years. But it seems the cost is reasonable
and can be done at a local apple store same-day : http://www.apple.com/support/macbookpro/service...

Marie, thanks for commenting. It's good to get different opinions. Perhaps
you have steadier hands. I just couldn't get it to work reliably and every
time I thought figured out the "trick" to getting it to work, it wouldn't
the next time around.

Totally agree. Kevin seems like a perfect head chef, but almost too good.
Dave obviously has a killer work ethic which might be more valuable in the
long run. Personally rooting for Dave.

This is one flick that I liked a lot as a kid but on a recent viewing
it didn't hold up as well, for reasons listed above. And also watching
it the day after Back to The Future hampered it a bit, too.

But as a preview, the trilogy is partly redeemed by the third
installment... review coming shortly...

Yeah... that one scene still cracked me up. Overall I was surprised how well the flick held up. Even the terrorists that come after Doc Brown has some spooky relevance to today.

Cool note on Lewis and Mill Valley - drove through there just the other weekend.

What happened to Zemeckis? I liked Forrest Gump and Castaway, but now he's into all this CGI mo-cap nonsense.

Typical, say it's up to the user to make up for technology's failings.

I'm sick of people making excuses for technology, and criticism forces
companies to make things better. If enough people complain and demand
better products, maybe we'll get them.

That was definitely odd... seems Mr. Emporer had to get mutated to explain
why he looked like hell in Empire and Jedi. Actually a lot of corny stuff in
this installment essentially had to happen in order to line up with the
original trilogy - like Yoda hiding on Dagobah and the twins being
separated. Similarly, the kid Jedis had to get killed because there weren't
any in the original trilogy. Maybe Lucas would have been better off not
having any kid jedis... oh well.
I can understand folks not being into this installment but it was the first
of the prequels that really felt like Star Wars to me. Feels like George
finally started to get it right in parts. Unfortunately he took three movies
to get there.

yeah kinda surprising how much I now realize I was using those
utilities. Got used to glancing up at the menu bar to see how fast the
network was going, what temperature the CPUs were, etc.

Good point about the effects getting way out of control. Also add that
Lucas got to use as much CGI as he wanted simply because, well, he's
George Lucas with huge monetary resources. That freedom seems to have
let him indulge some bad tendencies. In particular, the whole "green
screen" thing and all CGI chararcters (more about this in future
reviews of these flicks...)

At this stage I still prefer Spielberg sci fi (Minority Report, War of
the Worlds) but Indy 4: ouch... quote myself: "a stunt man working his
way beneath a speeding car was infinitely more satisfying than Shia
LaBeouf hit in the crotch by virtual jungle plants."

True, iPhone apps is a whole new category of price sensitivity. For me it's about the same - 99 cents or $1.99 I can drop easily but I start checking out the reviews when it gets into the 3 - 5 dollar range.

I'd love to see what kind of apps a kid would install on their own Touch.

I assume both the DisplayPort and the Mini DVI are HDCP? Seems like Apple
would treat each port similarly.

Yeah, it definitely still sounds crazy. Perhaps some of our grasping is the
idea that Apple has some uber master plan in the works - as in, the reason
why the Apple TV has not seen a major update in some time, or why the
portables are all called "MacBook Pro" is because this tablet has some
overlap with the Apple TV and MacBook. But probably, not.
At this point I just must have faith that Apple has some angle on this that
none of us have thought of yet. Maybe it's the return of the Newton...

Having only iPhone apps on this tablet just seems so limiting for the
user. And yet, I can see the temptation - Apple creates a real closed
box environment where they get to approve any software that appears on
it.
